Look-alike Spanish/English cognates are exceptionally useful to teachers and students of Spanish and English for three reasons: (1) their similar spellings and pronunciations provide an easily accessible vocabulary in the new language; (2) the contrast between them facilitates an understanding of the phonetics of the language to be acquired; and (3) the number of lexical similarities between the languages provides beginning students of either with an encouraging appreciation of the affinity between them. The Spanish language has numerous words that are similar in appearance to English words but have different meanings. These false cognates can have vastly different meanings from the English words they resemble, or may only differ in nuance. This dictionary covers Spanish false cognates.

A central debate about the description of auxiliary selection concerns the regularity of auxiliary selection from a typological perspective.
