Synopsis Eight Years in Kosovo by : Vladimir Kanev

The European Union Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo (EULEX) was launched in 2008 as the largest civilian mission under the Common Security and Defence Policy of the European Union. The book presents a personal and professional story told by an EULEX-Kosovo International judge. V. S. Kanev is a Bulgarian magistrate who worked (2008 - 2016) for the EU Rule of Law Mission. His Narration is both memoir and documentary. Main part of the storyline is conveyed from a personal angle. The author has shared his diary, and the narrative is focused on the author's personal actions and duties. The book also contains useful information on the reasons leading to deployment of the mission, the mission's mandate as well as political and social difficulties of its day-to-day performance. The description of political conflicts and legal problems may be helpful for studies of modern nation building and rule of law evolution. Stories of the ethnic and religious conflicts portray a post-conflict society struggling to salvage their future from the dooms of the past.

Synopsis The Kosovo Report by : Independent International Commission on Kosovo

The war in Kosovo was a turning point: NATO deployed its armed forces in war for the first time, and placed the controversial doctrine of 'humanitarian intervention' squarely in the world's eye. It was an armed intervention for the purpose of implementing Security Council resolutions-but without Security Council authorization. This report tries to answer a number of burning questions, such as why the international community was unable to act earlier and prevent the escalation of the conflict, as well as focusing on the capacity of the United Nations to act as global peacekeeper. The Commission recommends a new status for Kosovo, 'conditional independence', with the goal of lasting peace and security for Kosovo-and for the Balkan region in general. But many of the conslusions may be beneficially applied to conflicts the world-over.

Synopsis Europe and the Post-Yugoslav Space by : Branislav Radeljic

Charting the path from intervention to integration Europe and the Post-Yugoslav Space examines the role of Europeanization on the development of the countries of the former Yugoslavia. Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo may have a shared history but their experiences, views and attitudes to European integration vary dramatically. Opinion within each state is often equally as keenly divided as to the benefits of active membership. The debate within each country and their comparative differences in approach provide fascinating case studies on the importance and relevance of the EU and the effectiveness of Europeanization. A wide range of contributors with significant experience gained within the EU as well as their country of origin use their expert understanding of the language and cultures of the countries concerned to provide detailed and rich insights into the troubled history and potential of the post-Yugoslav space.

Synopsis International Multiparty Mediation and Conflict Management by : Sinisa Vukovic

This volume aims to provide a detailed explanation of the effects of cooperation and coordination on international multiparty mediation in conflicts. Contemporary scholarship stresses that the crucial ingredients for a successful multiparty mediation are ‘consistency in interests’ and ‘cooperation and coordination’ between mediators. This book seeks to supplement that understanding by investigating how much the ‘consistency of interests’ and ‘cooperation and coordination’ affect the overall process, and what happens to the mediation process when mediating parties do not share the same idea and interest in finding a common solution. At the same time, it explores the obstacles in achieving coordination and coherence between various mediators in such an environment and how to surmount the problems that multiple mediators face when operating without a ‘common script’ in attempting to mediate a negotiated settlement. The study investigates three distinct mechanisms (both on the systemic and contextual level) that have the potential to deter defection from a (potential) member of the multiparty mediation coalition: geo-political shifts, changes in the conflict dynamics, and mediators’ ability to bargain for a cooperative relationship. As the number of states and international actors that are involved in mediation increases, a careful assessment is necessary not only of their relative institutional strengths and weaknesses, but also of how to promote complementary efforts and how to synchronize the whole process when one actor is transferring the responsibilities for mediation to others. This book will be of much interest to students of mediation, conflict management, war and conflict studies, security studies and IR. Synopsis Grameen in Kosovo by : Hongyu Wang

Microfinance has, over the past decades, been proved as an effective and irreversible technique for tackling poverty. Banker to the Poor Muhammad Yunus's story in Bangladesh has long become a worldwide household tale. Yet this book brings you into a successful Grameen replication story in one of the most troublesome regions in the post-Cold War Balkans and details how microlending, often a few hundred euros at a time, can be a lifeline for tens of thousands of village women in the post-war Kosovo. Olympic volunteer and CGI U commitment-maker Hongyu Wang's two months ground survey, observation, and interview in Bangladesh, in Dhaka and in villages, with Yunus himself or with this replication's pioneers who stationed in Kosovo from NATO bombing days up until now, is a vivid account on how microcredit humanitarian manoeuvre, in war and in peace, can be just as successful in any culture and socioeconomic-political circumstance.
