This Festschrift volume, published in honor of Kurt Mehlhorn on the occasion of his 60th birthday, contains 28 papers written by his former Ph.D. students and colleagues as well as by his former Ph.D. advisor, Bob Constable. The volume's title is a translation of the title of Kurt Mehlhorn's first book, "Effiziente Algorithmen", published by Teubner-Verlag in 1977. This Festschrift demonstrates how the field of algorithmics has developed and matured in the decades since then. The papers included in this volume are organized in topical sections on models of computation and complexity; sorting and searching; combinatorial optimization with applications; computational geometry and geometric graphs; and algorithm engineering, exactness and robustness.

Here's a cutting-edge resource that brings you up-to-date with all the recent advances in computational electromagnetics. You get the most-current information available on the multilevel fast multipole algorithm in both the time and frequency domains, as well as the latest developments in fast algorithms for low frequencies and specialized structures, such as the planar and layered media. These algorithms solve large electromagnetics problems with shorter turn around time, using less computer memory.

Due to its inherent time-scale locality characteristics, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) has received considerable attention in signal/image processing. Wavelet transforms have excellent energy compaction characteristics and can provide perfect reconstruction. The shifting (translation) and scaling (dilation) are unique to wavelets. Orthogonality of wavelets with respect to dilations leads to multigrid representation. As the computation of DWT involves filtering, an efficient filtering process is essential in DWT hardware implementation. In the multistage DWT, coefficients are calculated recursively, and in addition to the wavelet decomposition stage, extra space is required to store the intermediate coefficients. Hence, the overall performance depends significantly on the precision of the intermediate DWT coefficients. This work presents new implementation techniques of DWT, that are efficient in terms of computation, storage, and with better signal-to-noise ratio in the reconstructed signal.

This book provides a systematic treatment of the theoretical foundation and algorithmic tools necessary in the design of energy-efficient algorithms and protocols in wireless body sensor networks (WBSNs). These problems addressed in the book are of both fundamental and practical importance. Specifically, the book delivers a comprehensive treatment on the following problems ranging from theoretical modeling and analysis, to practical algorithm design and optimization: energy-efficient clustering-based leader election algorithms in WBSNs; MAC protocol for duty-cycling WBSNs with concurrent traffic; multi-channel broadcast algorithms in duty-cycling WBSNs; and energy-efficient sleep scheduling algorithms in WBSNs. Target readers of the book are researchers and advanced-level engineering students interested in acquiring in-depth knowledge on the topic and on WBSNs and their applications, both from theoretical and engineering perspective.
