Synopsis Downwind Faster Than the Wind by : Nicholas Landell-Mills
New analysis shows how Newton and Galileo provide a straightforward and useful explanation of sailing. According to Newton, the sail re-directs a mass of air of the apparent wind backwards to create a backward force (Force = ma). The reactive equal and opposite forward force pushes the sailboat ahead. According to Galileo a boat can sail downwind faster than the wind for the same reasons that it can sail upwind faster than the wind. Each tack is simply the mirror image of the other one. This is because in both situations the sailboat experiences a headwind, and the true wind is moving backwards relative to the boat. When sailing both upwind and downwind, the sail extracts momentum and energy from the true wind by slowing it down. That's it.

Synopsis Higher Performance Sailing by : Frank Bethwaite
'Monumental!' - Bob Ross, Australian Sailing High Performance Sailing is now regarded as the bible of racing sailors and carries a string of endorsements from high achievers. Since its publication in 1984, racing yachts and dinghies have developed out of all recognition - a new high-tech breed of 'apparent wind' fast racers has claimed the water and so far no-one has applied themselves seriously to analysing what makes these boats sail fast (and what will make them faster). This is Frank Bethwaite's ground-breaking achievement in Higher Performance Sailing. By means of extensive research, and working with sailors of different racing calibre, Bethwaite analyses how to harness the apparent wind for increased speed and better position on your rivals. Higher Performance Sailing will provide the key to racing sailors' dreams. Praise for Bethwaite's High Performance Sailing: 'It represents a breakthrough...It is a book that my Olympic squad will benefit from.' Rod Carr, former British Olympic Sailing Team Manager 'Allowed only one "if only" in yacht racing, it would have been to have read Higher Performance Sailing years ago.' Bob Fisher, journalist, broadcaster and international championship winner

Synopsis The Symmetry of Sailing by : Ross Garrett
Here is a detailed study of the motive forces of a yacht written in clear and accessible terms. The author has the rare gift of enabling his readers to relate the nautical phenomena with which they are so familiar to a scientific explanation of how and why these occur. The first part covers downwind sailing, upwind sailing, sails, the hull, and the dynamic motion of a yacht. Part Two is devoted to more mathematical explanations of the same phenomena for those requiring a more scientific approach.

Synopsis Airborne Wind Turbine by : Fouad Sabry
What Is Airborne Wind Turbine An airborne wind turbine is a design concept for a wind turbine with a rotor that is supported in the air without a tower. This allows the wind turbine to take advantage of the greater wind speed and persistence at higher altitudes, while also avoiding the expense of tower construction and the requirement for slip rings or yaw mechanisms. There are two possible locations for an electrical generator: on the ground or in the air. The ability to securely hang and maintain turbines hundreds of meters from the ground in heavy winds and storms is one of the challenges faced. Other challenges include transmitting the electricity that has been gathered and/or created back to land and interfering with aviation. How You Will Benefit (I) Insights, and validations about the following topics: Chapter 1: Airborne wind turbine Chapter 2: Aircraft Chapter 3: Unpowered aircraft Chapter 4: Aerostat Chapter 5: Balloon (aeronautics) Chapter 6: Savonius wind turbine Chapter 7: Hybrid airship Chapter 8: List of energy resources Chapter 9: Allsopp Helikite Chapter 10: Airborne wind energy Chapter 11: Unconventional wind turbines Chapter 12: Tethered balloon Chapter 13: Tethered Aerostat Radar System Chapter 14: Laddermill Chapter 15: Kite types Chapter 16: Kytoon Chapter 17: Unpowered flight Chapter 18: Makani (company) Chapter 19: Aerostat (disambiguation) Chapter 20: Crosswind kite power Chapter 21: Kitepower (II) Answering the public top questions about airborne wind turbine. Synopsis Fast Handling Technique by : Frank Bethwaite
From the author of the bestselling High Performance Sailing and Higher Performance Sailing comes the first scientific analysis of what makes fast sailors fast. Eschewing the idea that luck or innate talent are the keys to success, Frank Bethwaite shows how knowledge truly is power. Making use of video cameras aligned to GPS read-outs to track the fastest racers, he meticulously analyses what winners do and how they do it, to show the rest of us how to get the best out of a racing craft. Frank Bethwaite's previous books were groundbreaking bibles that applied scientific theories to how sails and hulls interact with wind and water to influence boat speed. But whilst they applied scientific theories to boat construction, they didn't apply science to practical boat handling. This book fills that gap, and then goes further. Budding racers of all levels will welcomethis unique book as a godsend. It will inform, instruct and enable them toemploy the techniques (and timing) of the most successful racers, and make racingmore competitive for participants, and more exciting for those of us watching.

Synopsis Good Math by : Mark C. Chu-Carroll
Mathematics is beautiful--and it can be fun and exciting as well as practical. Good Math is your guide to some of the most intriguing topics from two thousand years of mathematics: from Egyptian fractions to Turing machines; from the real meaning of numbers to proof trees, group symmetry, and mechanical computation. If you've ever wondered what lay beyond the proofs you struggled to complete in high school geometry, or what limits the capabilities of computer on your desk, this is the book for you. Why do Roman numerals persist? How do we know that some infinities are larger than others? And how can we know for certain a program will ever finish? In this fast-paced tour of modern and not-so-modern math, computer scientist Mark Chu-Carroll explores some of the greatest breakthroughs and disappointments of more than two thousand years of mathematical thought. There is joy and beauty in mathematics, and in more than two dozen essays drawn from his popular "Good Math" blog, you'll find concepts, proofs, and examples that are often surprising, counterintuitive, or just plain weird. Mark begins his journey with the basics of numbers, with an entertaining trip through the integers and the natural, rational, irrational, and transcendental numbers. The voyage continues with a look at some of the oddest numbers in mathematics, including zero, the golden ratio, imaginary numbers, Roman numerals, and Egyptian and continuing fractions. After a deep dive into modern logic, including an introduction to linear logic and the logic-savvy Prolog language, the trip concludes with a tour of modern set theory and the advances and paradoxes of modern mechanical computing. If your high school or college math courses left you grasping for the inner meaning behind the numbers, Mark's book will both entertain and enlighten you.
