Synopsis Don't Be Shy, Nurse! by : Kaye Caradoc

Nurses today have very different lives and training from those who embarked upon this career 40 years ago. This is this is an account of the three year's training of a nurse - set in a London hospital in the 1960s. It is the story of one initially naive student nurse and her colleagues, as they progress from their first days as the junior girls, to the day when they eventually hold the letters of professional competence in their hands. In order to arrive at this senior status, they experience many highs and lows, from the day of their arrival onto their first wards, where they are faced with the often, terrifying domination of the ward sisters; we then walk with them through the partings of the ways and the reunions, as they are split up and seconded to other branches of the hospital. Throughout the three years, we get to know of not just the hard work and discipline, but also of their friendships, laughter, and tears. Nurses in training today, will be surprised at the sometimes dreadfully outdated and old -fashioned lives which these 1960's nurses, seem to live, but they will no doubt be charmed and fascinated too, by this really lovely story which is not so much about medical procedures and practices but is as much about the lives of those young girls who chose to leave home and live their lives in this way.

Synopsis Contemporary Plays from Iraq by : A. Al-Azraki

Contemporary Plays from Iraq is a ground-breaking collection of Middle Eastern drama translated into English for the very first time. With works from both established and emerging male and female playwrights, written in country and in exile, this volume offers current Iraqi perspectives on a war and occupation that have significantly impacted the Middle East and the rest of the world. Dealing exclusively with contemporary plays originating from Iraq, this anthology gives under-studied Arabic political theatre the attention it deserves and provides a general introduction that sets the plays within their cultural and historical contexts. The plays are preceded by introductions from the playwrights themselves, further enriching each piece for the enjoyment and understanding of the reader. The volume is introduced and translated by James Al-Shamma, Assistant Professor at Belmont University, US, and A. Al-Azraki, an Iraqi playwright.

Synopsis But Still Like Air by : Velina Houston

In this pathbreaking volume, Velina Hasu Houston gathers together eleven plays that speak in the "hybridized, unique American voices of Asian descent -- and often dissent." These writers resist the bigotry that attempts to target them solely as people of color as well as the homogenizing tendencies of a multiculturalism that fails to recognize the varied make-up of Asian America. Anthologized for the first time, these plays testify to the rich complexity of Asian American experience while they also demonstrate the different styles and thematic concerns of the individual playwrights. What are Asian American plays about? Family conflicts, sexuality, social upheaval, betrayal ... the stuff of all drama. Whether the characters are a middle-aged Taiwanese woman who is married to an Irish American and who dreams of opening a Chinese restaurant, a Chinese American female bond trader trying to survive a corporate takeover, or an ABC (American Born Chinese) gay man whose lover has AIDS, their Asian-ness is only a part of their story. As a playwright, Houston is keenly aware of the rigid formulas that often exclude writers of color and women women writers from mainstream theater. But Still, Like air, I'll Rise brings forth vibrant new work that challenges producers and audiences to broaden their expectations, to attend to the unfamiliar voices that expresses the universal and particular vision of Asian American playwrights.
