This collection of texts was created in connection with the conference "Documenting Southern Ethiopia: recognizing past legacies and forging the way forward", which took place in February 2017 in collaboration with the Frobenius Institute, Frankfurt at the Hawassa University

Analyzes the role of intellectuals and students in Ethiopian state power before and after the Italian Occupation (1936-1941).

The herd dynamics model (HDM) component of the Linked Economic and Animal Systems (LEAS) model specifically documented here is developed in the context of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Livestock Systems financed by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and managed by the University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Animal Sciences. The main objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive analytical approach or systems model capable of assessing (i) how animal herd or flock sizes change over time and in response to on-farm policies; (ii) how alternative national trends and policies affect future development of the livestock system as a whole; (iii) how changes in livestock policies affect people working throughout the livestock system; and (iv) how changes in animal-source food (ASF) production and prices affect the real incomes and consumption patterns of different population groups. The HDM developed provides a highly detailed description of the cattle sector while laying a framework that can be easily adapted to other types of livestock. The model allows one to closely examine the performance of the livestock sector disaggregated by agroecology zones or regions. The HDM is linked both ways with a core economywide model through economic variables such as relative prices of livestock activities, prices and availability of intermediate inputs including feed, and changes in supply of livestock capital in the meat and milk production sectors. Given the complex interplay in the livestock sector such as offtake decisions, death rates, milk and meat yield, and feeding practices (through quality indexed feed demand), the HDM developed under this project is a fully dynamic livestock sector model that provides several avenues for policy analysis on livestock management, the sector’s future trajectory, and its dynamics, given risks and opportunities within the sector and beyond.

In 1955, nearly twenty years after publishing Im Lande des Gada ( In the Land of Gada), Jensen revisited the Gedeo of southern Ethiopia. Here, published for the first time, is the classic ethnography that Jensen wrote following that fieldwork. Divided into chapters on the country and its people, social life, the age groups and the dual division, the political order, and religious and spiritual life, and illustrated with 33 historical photographs from the archives of the Frobenius Institute, the book includes a preface and introduction by Getachew Senishaw.

The ethnography of the Sidaama people of southern Ethiopia by A. E. Jensen, Elisabeth Pauli and Helmut Straube goes back to their research expedition to Sidaama in 1954/55. Following their research trip, they drafted the present work, which they did not publish. It is a classic ethnography divided into the following chapters: Land and people, social life, religious life, course of life, and oral traditions. The ethnography is illustrated by photographs from the archives of the Frobenius Institute.

This volume brings together a number of important perspectives on language documentation and endangerment in Africa from an international cohort of scholars with vast experience in the field. Offering insights from rural and urban settings throughout the continent, these essays consider topics that range from the development of a writing system to ideologies of language endangerment, from working with displaced communities to the role of colonial languages in reshaping African repertoires, and from the insights of archeology to the challenges of language documentation as a doctoral project. The authors are concerned with both theoretical and practical aspects of language documentation as they address the ways in which the African context both differs from and resembles contexts of endangerment elsewhere in the world. This volume will be useful to fieldworkers and documentalists who work in Africa and beyond.

William Henry Singleton was born in 10 August 1843 in New Bern, North Carolina. His father was probably William G. Singleton (1823-1881) and his mother was Lettice Nelson. He enlisted in the Union Army in 1863. He married Maria Wanton (1849-1898) in 1868. Their daughter, Lulu (1884-1856), married Collins L. Fitch (1182-1951) in 1905. They had eight children. Includes Hall, Nelson and related families.

The ethnography of the Wolayta people of southern Ethiopia by Eike Haberland goes back to his research in Wolayta in the years 1954/55, 1967, and 1970/71. Following his research, Haberland wrote the present work, which he did not publish. It is a classic ethnography divided into the following chapters: Sacred kingship, myths of state, court culture and administration, law and justice, the meritorious complex, feasts and rituals, crops, economy and folkloric material. The ethnography is illustrated by historical photographs from the archives of the Frobenius Institute.
