Trombone Book Two of the Brass in Color Beginner Method Series uses a color-coded tablature (Color Slide Positions) to help students learn the slide positions of the trombone and apply them to notes in the Low Range. The Low Range begins with the notes Bb/A# notated on the staff, and the remaining notes of the Low Range are presented in a descending chromatic order and end with the note E that is notated below the staff. For each lesson the notes of the Low Range will be introduced relative to the notes of the Middle Range, and these notes will correspond with the Color Slide Positions. In this way students will be able to see how the same slide positions are used to play different notes on the trombone. In addition to learning the notes of the Low Range, students will be introduced to the music concepts of slurs, eighth notes and scales. Standard music notation has also been included with each lesson to help the instructor know which notes to play, and to teach students how to read the notes as they match them with the slide positions of the trombone. Breath marks, articulation, dynamics and tempi are not noted in the lessons and may be added by the instructor as needed. Also, key signatures are not used so that students will focus primarily on listening and learning the slide positions associated with the notes. The High Range begins with the notes Gb/F#notated on the staff, and the remaining notes of the High Range are presented in an ascending chromatic order and end with the notes Bb/A# that are notated above and at the top of the staff. Along with the notes of the High Range the notes of the Middle Range are also presented in an ascending order to help students learn the correct slide positions for the High Range. While learning the notes of the High Range students will be introduced to the music concepts of playing in 3/4 time, dotted quarter notes and the harmonic minor scale. Additionally, etudes are included to complete this trombone instructional series. These etudes allow students to practice playing each pitch of the Low, Middle and High Ranges without using Color Slide Positions. Standard music notation has also been included with each lesson. In this beginner method series students learn the note’s pitch by listening to his or her instructor, and by using the Color Slide Positions students will be able to easily match the note’s pitch with the positions of the trombone. Standard music notation has also been included with each lesson to help the instructor know which notes to play and to teach students how to read the notes as they match them with the slide positions of the trombone. Also, key signatures are not used so that students will become familiar with the concept of reading notes as they are associated with the Color Slide Positions. This book has over 100 etudes and 33 duets relying exclusively on the natural slurs of a trombone. They are designed for the common F-attachment tenor trombone although one section is meant exclusively for the double-valve bass trombone. They progress from easy to quite challenging.
