Synopsis Digital Mosaic by : David Taras
The digital world has impacted the way Canadians socialize and interact with others, teach and learn, conduct business, experience culture, fight political battles, and acquire knowledge. The traditional forms of media, newspapers, radio, and television are being replaced by digital media which is fast, sporadic, and sometimes inaccurate. As a result, Canada is experiencing a number of overlapping crises simultaneously: a crisis in traditional media, a crisis in public broadcasting, a crisis in news and journalism, and a crisis in citizen engagement.

Synopsis Remote Sensing by : Floyd F. Sabins
Designed for an introductory course in remote sensing, this highly regarded text offers 28 pages with color photos, Sabins trademark clarity, and comprehensive coverage. The first chapter vividly introduces the major remote sensing systems and the interactions between electromagnetic energy and materials that are the basis for remote sensing. Six following chapters describe the major imaging systems. After a digital image-processing chapter, Sabins devotes the rest of the text to descriptions of practical applications of remote sensing to environmental monitoring, oil and mineral exploration, land-use and geographic information systems, and natural hazards.

Synopsis Basic Biology for Born Engineers by : Guenter Albrecht-Buehler
Physics owes much of its success to the application of differential calculus. Correspondingly, most laws of physics are formulated as differential equations. This success has created the prejudice that a science cannot be ‘exact’ unless it stands firmly on a foundation of calculus. This doesn’t, however, work for biology. Living things are not as continuous, let alone differentiable, as most organisms and their parts change or end quite abruptly. Biology cannot offer differential equations for (say) the role of chromosomal telomeres in aging, or a link between macrophage polyploidy and cancer. The information flow between the limbic system and the frontal cortex is far too erratic to permit differentiation. The pheromone secretions that control the social order of ants follow no mathematical laws. The topology of the human skeleton is neither a perfect sphere, nor an idealized doughnut. However, all these and countless other biological phenomena decide life and death and are amazingly exact As such, instead of even trying to paint living things with the exquisitely resolving brush of differential calculus, we may accept that they are actually made up of individual and sizable ‘pixels’. Hence, this book presents a novel view of biology as the unified science of ‘living mosaics’, which consist of discrete, yet interacting, ‘tiles’, which, in turn, are such ‘mosaics’ in their own rights.

Synopsis The Conservation and Presentation of Mosaics: At What Cost? by : Jeanne Marie Teutonico
In recent years, funding for the conservation of cultural heritage has become increasingly difficult to obtain, and this trend shows no sign of changing significantly in the foreseeable future. The twelfth triennial meeting of the International Committee for the Conservation of Mosaics, held in Sardinia in October 2014, focused on the theme of cost, broadly considered, relating specifically to the preservation and presentation of the world’s mosaic heritage. This handsome, abundantly illustrated volume provides a comprehensive record of the conference. The volume’s sixty-seven papers and posters, comprising contributions from more than one hundred leading experts in the field, reflect the conference’s principal themes: cost, methods of survey and documentation, conservation and management, education and training, backing materials and techniques, presentation and display, and case studies. Papers are presented either in English, French, or Italian; there are abstracts in English and either French or Italian for all entries. The volume will be of interest to conservators, site managers, and others responsible for conserving the mosaic heritage, especially in these challenging times.
