Synopsis Developing Airport Systems in Asian Cities by : Asian Development Bank
Asia’s emerging and growing megacities are expected to handle a large volume of air traffic flows for regional, national, and local economic development in wider production networks. In some phases of development, major capital investments to improve airport capacity and accessibility within megacities are required. This report reviews urban policies on airport development and investment in airport infrastructure in Asian megacities, analyzes the influence of airport system development on spatial transformation of megacities, and offers policy options to promote economic competitiveness of growing and emerging megacities.

Synopsis Airport Urbanism by : Max Hirsh
Thirty years ago, few residents of Asian cities had ever been on a plane, much less outside their home countries. Today, flying, and flying abroad, is commonplace. How has this leap in cross-border mobility affected the design and use of such cities? And how is it accelerating broader socioeconomic and political changes in Asian societies? In this book, Max Hirsh undertakes an unprecedented study of airport infrastructure in five Asian cities - Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Through this lens he examines the exponential increase in international air traffic and its implications for the planning and design of the contemporary city.

Synopsis Creating Livable Asian Cities by : Bambang Susantono
This book explores how Asia's fast-growing cities can fulfil their potential as engines of economic prosperity and provide a livable environment for all citizens. But for this to happen, major challenges that reduce urban communities' quality of life and economic opportunities must be addressed. These include poor planning, a lack of affordable housing, inequalities, pollution, climate vulnerabilities, and urban infrastructure deficits. The book's 19 articles unwrap these challenges and present solutions focused on smart and inclusive planning, sustainable transport and energy, innovative financing, and resilience and rejuvenation.

In Airport Urbanism, Max Hirsh undertakes an unprecedented study of airport infrastructure in five Asian cities—Bangkok, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore. Through this lens he examines the exponential increase in international air traffic and its implications for the planning and design of the contemporary city. By investigating the low-cost, informal, and transborder transport systems used by new members of the flying public—such as migrant workers, retirees, and Asia’s emerging middle class—he uncovers an architecture of incipient global mobility that has been inconspicuously inserted into places not typically associated with the infrastructure of international air travel. Drawing on material gathered in restricted zones of airports and border control facilities, Hirsh provides a fascinating, up-close view of the mechanics of cross-border mobility. Moreover, his personal experience of growing up and living on three continents inflects his analyses with unique insight into the practicalities of international migration and into the mindset of people on the move.

Synopsis Scalability of the Air Transportation System and Development of Multi-airport Systems by : Philippe A. Bonnefoy
(cont.) In the United States and in Europe, there is the need to protect non-utilized exiting airport infrastructure (both civil and military airports) that can later be used to accommodate demand through the emergence of secondary airports. In parts of Asia where the existing under-utilized airport infrastructure is weak and where projections of high volume of demand -with high uncertainty- are high, there is the need to apply a dynamic approach to develop multi-airport systems. This approach includes actions such as reserving land area for future airport development and keeping original airports open since this option has proven to be useful and successful in the other regions of the world (i.e. United States and Europe). In some parts of Asia, such as India, where the military airport infrastructure is more developed than in other parts, there is also the need, as in the United States and Europe, to protect these airports since they may become future secondary airports following the airport status conversion dynamics that were observed in Europe.

Synopsis Developing Strategies for the Modern International Airport by : Alan Williams
Developing Strategies for the Modern International Airport identifies and analyses the primary issues facing the modern international airport, and their role in a global economy. Based on the premise that the aviation industry has a primary and decisive role in the economic and social development of the modern international economy, this book examines the modern international airport and its process of integration into the larger global economy. As the integration of the aviation industry within the larger context of international business grows, there are an increasing number of important airport sites world wide, which are exhibiting the characteristics of what has been called by one authority an ’aerotropolis’, where major airports are integrated into the wider multi business dynamics of cities such as Shanghai or Beijing. Such pioneering developments are indicative of this region and bring with them a host of new issues and challenges for economic development. While international projections of the growth in demand for aviation services suggest that the key region for future expansion will be the ASEAN group of countries, there are marked differences between countries in their overall plans for viable economic development. As a result, the essential raising of funding required for international airport development must compete against other potential development projects all trying to attract the attention of national policy makers.

Synopsis Research Anthology on Reliability and Safety in Aviation Systems, Spacecraft, and Air Transport by : Management Association, Information Resources
As with other transportation methods, safety issues in aircraft can result in a total loss of life. Recently, the air transport industry has come under immense scrutiny after several deaths occurred due to aircraft design and airlines that allowed improperly inspected aircraft to fly. Spacecraft too have found errors in system software that could lead to catastrophic failure. It is imperative that the aviation and aerospace industries continue to revise and refine safety protocols from the construction and design of aircraft, to secure and improve aviation systems, and to test and inspect aircraft. The Research Anthology on Reliability and Safety in Aviation Systems, Spacecraft, and Air Transport is a vital reference source that examines the latest scholarly material on the use of adaptive and assistive technologies in aviation to establish clear guidelines for the design and implementation of such technologies to better serve the needs of both military and civilian pilots. It also covers new information technology use in aviation systems to streamline the cybersecurity, decision making, planning, and design processes within the aviation industry. Highlighting a range of topics such as air navigation systems, computer simulation, and airline operations, this multi-volume book is ideally designed for pilots, scientists, engineers, aviation operators, air traffic controllers, air crash investigators, teachers, academicians, researchers, and students.

Synopsis Chinese City and Regional Planning Systems by : Li Yu
While the Chinese planning system is vitally important to the rapid development which has been taking place over the past three decades, this is the first text to provide a comprehensive examination and critical evaluation of this system. It sets the current system in historical context and explains the hierarchy of government departments responsible for planning and construction, the different types of plans produced and recent urban planning innovations which have been put into practice. Illustrated with boxed empirical case studies, it shows the problems faced by the planning system in facing the uncertainty in the market economy. In all, it provides readers with a full understanding of a complex and powerful system which is very distinct from other planning systems around the world. As such, it is essential reading for all students interested in the current development taking place in China and, in addition, to planning students with a general interest in planning systems and theory.
