Synopsis Dermal Drug Selection and Development by : Lionel Trottet
The authors show how the pharmaceutical industry faces the development of dermal drugs and provide the only book of its kind that describes how the industry develops and selects dermal drugs, complete with the challenges and opportunities of the field. Delivery of drugs through the skin has been an attractive and challenging area for research, and advances in modern technologies have resulted in a larger number of drugs being delivered transdermally, including conventional hydrophobic small molecule drugs, hydrophilic drugs and macromolecules. Offering the perspective from the industrial side of selection and development of drugs, the primary audience is geared towards the pharmaceutical industry but can also offer valuable information to clinicians, compounding pharmacists, and similarly pharmacy students. Dermal Drug Selection and Development covers the scientific gaps that exist in terms of dermal pharmacokinetics and the resulting uncertainty by clinicians when choosing a drug candidate.

Synopsis Topical Drug Bioavailability, Bioequivalence, and Penetration by : Vinod P. Shah
This authoritative volume explores advances in the techniques used to measure percutaneous penetration of drugs and chemicals to assess bioavailability and bioequivalence and discusses how they have been used in clinical and scientific investigations. Seven comprehensive sections examine topics including in vitro drug release, topical drugs products, clinical studies, and guidelines and workshop reports, among others. The book also describes how targeted transdermal drug delivery and more sophisticated mathematical modelling can aid in understanding the bioavailability of transdermal drugs. The first edition of this book was an important reference guide for researchers working to define the effectiveness and safety of drugs and chemicals that penetrated the skin. This second edition contains cutting-edge advances in the field and is a key resource to those seeking to define the bioavailability and bioequivalence of percutaneously active compounds to improve scientific and clinical investigation and regulation.

Synopsis Topics in Topicals by : R. Marks
Substances that are applied to the skin to heal it, make it feel better or improve its appearance, have much in common. They can all do damage to the skin as well as perform the task for which they were designed. They and the substances they contain are all absorbed through the skin to a greater or lesser extent. In addition, all these agents are constructed in the same general way. For these reasons it seems odd and uneconomical to consider topical pharmaceuticals, toiletry products and cosmetics separately. This was the reasoning behind the holding of a small symposium of workers involved with one or another aspect of the formulation of substances destined for application to the skin. Several aspects of the subject are covered in this book which is based on the symposium and the contents should be of interest to all who are concerned with the prescription, assess ment or formulation of topical agents. 9 1 Acne Caused and Treated by Topical Agents W. J. CUNLIFFE The four main aetiological factors involved in the development of l acne are (1) an elevated sebum excretion rate ; (2) ductal hyper 3 keratinization 2; (3) an abnormality of microbial function ; (4) host 4 inflammatory response • Although opinions differ on both sides of the Atlantic, most authorities in the United Kingdom believe that increased sebum excretion rate is the main drive to acne, there being a definitive relationship between the severity of the acne and the seborrhoea of this disease.

Synopsis Skin Protection by : S. Schliemann
The differential application of skin protection in occupational settings becomes increasingly complex. Due to new scientific results and technological aspects as well as European and US regulations that have to be considered in the context of cosmetics and personal protective equipment, the practical application of skin protection requires constant reviewing and improvement. This publication provides a comprehensive update on specific cosmetic products from general principles of composition, protection from specific exposures, such as irritants, allergens and ultraviolet irradiation, to safety and efficacy testing both from the perspective of in vitro and in vivo testing. The second part focusses on special requirements and practical application in high-risk occupations and the respective skin protection programs, also including some critical remarks on the limitations of currently available skin protection measures. For specialists in the field of occupational dermatology such as dermatologists, allergists, occupational physicians, industrial hygienists, toxicologists, pharmacists and cosmetic scientists, this volume provides essential information on practical application, recommendation, testing or the making of personal skin protection products.
