Synopsis Financial Derivatives in India by : Jagadish R. Raiyani

In recent years, complex financial products - such as asset-backed securities, derivatives, credit-default swaps, and collateralised debt obligations - have proliferated in developing countries. These products have become highly popular with banks and financial institutions as they allow them to hedge their risks and manage their financial resources more efficiently. Although various structured products have enabled the transfer of risks and enhanced the liquidity of instruments, the recent turmoil in the US sub-prime mortgage market and related developments connected with complex derivatives have also brought to the fore the risks posed by these instruments. In India, financial products such as mortgage-backed securities and asset-backed securities are in existence. Besides the securitized products, the Indian forex and rupee derivative markets have also developed significantly over the years. In its Annual Policy Statement for the year 2008-2009, the Reserve Bank of India announced the introduction of currency futures in the eligible exchanges. This book explains the basics of financial derivatives and their growth and role in the Indian financial system.

Derivative products are popular financial instruments to hedge against the risk associated with the underlying. Interest rate derivatives are the most traded and widely accepted derivative instrument in the international market. But this product is not popular in Indian derivative market. In 1999, the Over the counter (OTC) interest rate derivative products introduced in Indian derivative market. This product was successful in terms of volumes. To overcome the drawbacks of the OTC derivative market, Indian financial market introduced exchange-traded interest rate derivative in 2003, 2009 and 2014. While two times (in 2003 and 2009) this product failed, in the third time (in 2014) the initial volumes are sharply declining in three exchanges viz. MCX-SX, NSE, and BSE. In this backdrop, this study attempts to analyse the past, present, and future of interest rate futures in the Indian derivative market using the volumes, values and the open interest of Interest rate derivatives for three exchanges.

Synopsis Interaction between Equity and Derivatives Markets in India by : Y. V. Reddy

The temporal relationship between the equities market and the derivatives market segments of the stock market has been studied using various methods and by identifying lead-lag relationship between the value of a representative index of the equities market and the price of a corresponding index futures contract in the derivatives market. It has been generally observed that price innovations appear first in the derivatives market and are then transmitted to the equities market. In this paper, the dynamics of such information transport between stock market and derivatives market are studied using the information theoretic concept of entropy, which captures non-linear dynamic relationship also.
