Synopsis Deathbed Gifts by : Andrew Borkowski
This book is the first extensive treatment of deathbed gifts in English law to be published. Such gifts are sometimes made by donors who, when facing impending death, transfer their property conditionally on death. It is a fascinating area of the law containing rules which have their originsin Roman Law, and which have continued to be been developed in modern law combining aspects of the laws of succession, trusts and personal property.Deathbed Gifts provides a detailed exposition and analysis of the current rules. It also traces the origins of the law and examines its continued development by the courts. The subject is represented by a rich case law including recent Court of Appeal decisions; a comprehensive summary of the caselaw is included.

Synopsis Gifts by : Richard Hyland
Gifts: A Study in Comparative Law is the first broad-based study of the law governing the giving and revocation of gifts ever attempted. Gift-giving is everywhere governed by social and customary norms before it encounters the law and the giving of gifts takes place largely outside of the marketplace. As a result of these two characteristics, the law of gifts provides an optimal lens through which to examine how different legal systems engage with social practice. The law of gifts is well-developed both in the civil and the common laws. Richard Hyland's study provides an excellent view of the ways in which different civil and common law jurisdictions confront common issues. The legal systems discussed include principally, in the common law, those of Great Britain, the United States, and India, and, in the civil law, the private law systems of Belgium and France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Professor Hyland also serves a critique of the dominant method in the field, which is a form of functionalism based on what is called the praesumptio similitudinis, namely the axiom that, once legal doctrine is stripped away, developed legal systems tend to reach similar practical results. His study demonstrates, to the contrary, that legal systems actually differ, not only in their approach and conceptual structure, but just as much in the results.

Synopsis Custom, Kinship, and Gifts to Saints by : Stephen D. White
White combines an intensive study of medieval law with insights from anthropology, religion, and social history to create a picture of French society in the Middle Ages which is impressive in its breadth and illuminating in its detail. By examining the practice whereby gifts of land were approved by the giver's relatives, he suggests novel ways of looking at early medieval law, kinship, land tenure, and gift exchange. White shows that laudatio parentum can be properly analyzed only within a combined social, legal, and religious context. Originally published in 1988. Synopsis Final Gifts by : Maggie Callanan
In this moving and compassionate classic—now updated with new material from the authors—hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years’ experience tending the terminally ill. Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts—of wisdom, faith, and love—that the dying leave for the living to share. Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end.

Synopsis Rethinking Relationships by : Steve Duck
In this book, Steve Duck, a founder of and prolific crossdisciplinary contributor to the field of relationships research, challenges students to re-examine their assumptions about relationships. Duck shows that in order to understand relationships properly, students must understand the roles that society, language, our taken-for-granted assumptions, and other people who share those assumptions play in the conduct of relationships. By analyzing talk and the material circumstances of our everyday lives, the author provides a number of features that help students apply the information to their own lives: Questions to Ask Your Friends: By discussing issues with their friends, students are able to see the cultural and social basis of some of their assumptions Discussion Questions: These questions provide thought-provoking topics for individual reflection or class discussion Listen in on Your Own Life: This feature asks students to find examples in their own lives and those of their friends

Synopsis Any Last Words? by : Joseph Hayden
Any Last Words? collects the last words of dozens of celebrities. Some are funny, some are touching, and some are heartbreaking. These last words give us a rare insight into the lives of these celebrities. As well as the focus on final words, the book also provides interesting facts about the lives and careers of some of the world's most interesting actors, writers, artists, athletes, politicians, and even criminals. The book is sometimes irreverent, with a dark wit, but at it's heart it is a celebration of the lives of its subjects and the mark that each of them left on the world.
