Synopsis Death Had Two Sons by : Yaël Dayan

A father is forced to choose between two sons, a decision that haunts the family decades later Haim Kalinsky lies in an Israeli hospital, terminal lung cancer about to cut his life short. Across the street stands his son Daniel, unable to visit his dying father because of an excruciating decision Haim made during the Second World War. When the Nazis marched into Warsaw, Haim awaited the inevitable. After his wife was deported, the German soldiers returned, sending Haim and his two sons, Daniel and Shmuel, to one of the extermination camps. It was there that Haim was confronted with the unanswerable question by one of the camp guards as they disembarked from the trains: Which son will you choose to live? With only a moment to decide, Haim instinctively pulled Shmuel to him, condemning Daniel to die. Decades later, it is Daniel who has survived the brutality of the camps and Shmuel who has perished. Strangers to each other, Daniel faces tremendous internal conflict as he struggles to reconnect with his father in his dying days. In this haunting and powerful tale of a broken father-son relationship, we come to identify with Daniel’s long and tortuous journey back to his father.

Synopsis Tell My Sons by : Lt. Col. Mark Weber

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER At the pinnacle of a soaring career in the U.S. Army, Lt. Col. Mark M. Weber was tapped to serve in a high-profile job within the Afghan Parliament as a military advisor. Weeks later, a routine physical revealed stage IV intestinal cancer in the thirty-eight-year-old father of three. Over the next two years he would fight a desperate battle he wasn’t trained for, with his wife and boys as his reluctant but willing fighting force. When Weber realized that he was not going to survive this final tour of combat, he began to write a letter to his boys, so that as they grew up without him, they would know what his life-and-death story had taught him—about courage and fear, challenge and comfort, words and actions, pride and humility, seriousness and humor, and viewing life as a never-ending search for new ideas and inspiration. This book is that letter. And it’s not just for his sons. It’s for everyone who can use the best advice a dying hero has to offer. Weber’s stories illustrate that in the end you become what you are through the causes to which you attach yourself—and that you’ve made your own along the way. Through his example, he teaches how to live an ordinary life in an extraordinary way. Praise for Tell My Sons “A gift to us all . . . Every page exudes courage, honesty, and an indomitable spirit. Mark Weber’s story has touched me in such a profound way.”—Mitch Albom, author of Tuesdays with Morrie “Tell My Sons is a deeply moving, personal account of a soldier’s journey into an ultimate frontier. As I read Mark Weber’s book, I was astonished by its honesty, courage, and discipline. This book offers one of the most profound and detailed descriptions of the strange world of cancer and should be essential reading for all of us who seek to understand that topsy-turvy terrain.”—Siddhartha Mukherjee, Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Emperor of All Maladies “Tell My Sons is one of the most profound and inspirational stories I have ever read. It may have been written for Mark’s children, but it may as well be a treatise for all of us about honest parenting and leadership with character in love, family, faith, and politics. For a man who is facing profound health issues, Mark is doing a remarkable job showing us all how to live with courage and integrity.”—Walter F. Mondale, former vice president of the United States “This book is why I have always been proud to call Mark Weber my son. His ability to reach across complex boundaries and write and speak with such depth and beauty makes him a modern day Lawrence of Arabia. Mark’s passion, attitude, and thoughts about life are what is best about America.”—General Babakir S. Zibari, chief of defense, Republic of Iraq “A poignant illustration of what being a hero is all about . . . Heroes exemplify invincible courage, character, and perseverance in times of insurmountable odds. Mark embodies these attributes. Tell My Sons will empower the reader with profound lessons of living life with hope and determination.”—John Elway, Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback

Synopsis Two Sons Too Many by : Aidan McNally

TWO sons TOO many, is my MEMOIR tale of a young adult's life as he grows through his childhood of rough and tumble to aim to the stars and do everything he can to reach them. The authors journey is full of fun loving events and adventure. When tragedy strikes it strikes hard and deep and though to many, disbelief, it does strike often. The highs reached within the story and the self transformation are quite surreal however a dedicated faith seems to reign through. The lows will jerk a tear or two here and there although what may seem unbelievable is all true and written within the covers. The trouble with the truth is always the same, it is the hardest thing to ever believe. Someone can tell anyone lies and they will be swallowed hook, line and sinker. Tell the same person the truth and the response is often, get out of here, now way and such. Well here in the story of growth and life and loss is revealed a story of true and devastating loss all the while living for the future. Some may find it is exactly how it happened to them and many will just pause and imagine, again the question, is this true? Enjoy us getting to know each other through my life story and continue to have faith no matter what life throws at you. This story may cause some heartfelt emotions and may also provide a good hearty chuckle and for both I cannot apologize only to inform you they are parts of my life, my story that may cause you never to leave this book down or if only to run and have a deep moment with yourself. TWO sons TOO many says it all in the title, whoever thought two sons would be too many? Now we must look for a daughter.

Synopsis Fatherless Sons by : Jonathan Diamond, Ph.D.

Praise for Fatherless Sons "Research shows that most men now are better fathers than their own fathers were to them. A generation of men are 'making it up,' giving to their children more than they received. No one describes the poignancy--and hope--of contemporary fatherhood better than Jonathan Diamond's heartfelt and insightful new book. For every man who had a father--and who wants to be one." --Terrence Real, author of I Don't Want to Talk About It: Overcoming the Secret Legacy of Male Depression and How Can I Get Through to You?: Closing the Intimacy Gap Between Men and Women "Diamond's moving account of his relationship with his father is a nuanced exploration of mourning and its aftermath." --Publishers Weekly "This is a powerful and beautiful book, written with warmth, humor, and generosity of spirit. Fatherless Sons guides us through the complex journey of grief, helping to transform pain and anguish into hope and healing." --Dr. Dusty Miller, author of Your Surviving Spirit and Women Who Hurt Themselves

Synopsis When My Son Died... This Is My Story by : Michaline Gregorowicz

After my son Joey passed away in June of 2000, I struggled to find any books that gave me concrete ideas of how I could help myself through my grieving process. Many family members and friends gifted me books, but they all told the same story. Have faith, cherish the wonderful memories and so on. Of course all good advice, just superficial. Then a few years after my son died, I happened to be at my hairdresser's, when a woman came in. I knew her through our sons' sports. I also knew that her oldest son had also passed away after Joey. It was getting close to Christmas, so I asked her if they were planning on putting up a tree. Her answer floored me! She had two other teenaged children at home. She shared with me that after her older son died, her surviving children wanted nothing to do with Christmas, no tree, no lights, nothing! So as my heart broke for her, I began telling her how I and my family celebrated our first Christmas after Joey died, and how that became a new tradition that continues through today. After listening to my story, this mom told me that I had helped her more in the last fifteen minutes, than anyone else had up to this point. That was my light bulb moment! And the spark to write my book was ignited. In the first few chapters of my book, I do recount the day my son died, his viewing and his funeral. I also discuss the many other issues that have to be dealt with during the months afterward. Although sad, I felt that this was an important part of my grieving process. But in the chapters that follow, I describe all the positive actions we took that helped us to go on. I discuss new found hobbies, seeking professional help, medium readings, and even the many beautiful signs I feel my son sends us to let us know he is alright. So in addition to a journey filled with very specific steps I and my family took to survive, it is also a story of my spiritual journey. So if you or anyone you know has lost a child or loved one, I am confident that some idea or story in my book will help them.

Synopsis Grief Is the Thing with Feathers by : Max Porter

Here he is, husband and father, scruffy romantic, a shambolic scholar--a man adrift in the wake of his wife's sudden, accidental death. And there are his two sons who like him struggle in their London apartment to face the unbearable sadness that has engulfed them. The father imagines a future of well-meaning visitors and emptiness, while the boys wander, savage and unsupervised. In this moment of violent despair they are visited by Crow--antagonist, trickster, goad, protector, therapist, and babysitter. This self-described "sentimental bird," at once wild and tender, who "finds humans dull except in grief," threatens to stay with the wounded family until they no longer need him. As weeks turn to months and the pain of loss lessens with the balm of memories, Crow's efforts are rewarded and the little unit of three begins to recover: Dad resumes his book about the poet Ted Hughes; the boys get on with it, grow up. Part novella, part polyphonic fable, part essay on grief, Max Porter's extraordinary debut combines compassion and bravura style to dazzling effect. Full of angular wit and profound truths, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers is a startlingly original and haunting debut by a significant new talent.

Synopsis Noe by : Phil Wolfson

Written with clarity and grace, this memoir of an adolescent boy's four-year struggle with leukemia, his untimely death at sixteen, and the aftermath is presented from three perspectives. Using journals and recollection, Noe's father Phil Wolfson recalls the events chronologically. His son's chemotherapy journal offers a stricken teenager's private view of illness, his wrestling with such enormous stress while striving to live within the framework of "normal" expectations for adolescence. The third perspective derives from the author's realization that his intimate relationship with Noe continues after death. Channeling his son's spirit, the author writes in his place, sharing with readers a near-adult view of living with illness and losing the battle to survive it. Noe reveals the inner world of familial love and discord, Noe's own remarkable coping, and the extraordinary stress Noe's illness had on his younger brother. It describes the quest for emotional and spiritual support through therapy, contact with renowned alternative healers, and the use of the drug MDMA for enhancing relationships. With poignant descriptions of an assisted dying process, Noe moves beyond a model of bereavement to offer a reminder of love's transcendence.

Synopsis Lasting Love by : Caroline Wright

This gorgeous picture-book meditation on loss and family love is a useful tool for children navigating a first experience with death. When a family member or another loved one becomes ill, one of the scariest aspects of their sickness is the way they may change, both physically and in spirit. The feeling of loss can come so early as the person becomes more difficult to recognize. It's a hard thing for anyone to understand, and especially so for a child. This book offers a helpful visualization of a sick person's essence as a friendly creature who remains strong and warm, even as the illness progresses. The creature is always around and never tries to cheer the child up, but only serves to keep them company. Caroline Wright and Willow Heath clearly understand that, like the creature, a book cannot "fix" a painful situation or even make it a little better. Instead they simply reflect the pain of loss back to the reader and help them understand that they are not alone.
