Dead Shot; Or, The White Vulture, is written by Albert W. Aiken (1846-1894) an American actor and author of plays and dime novels. Aiken was a prolific writer of pulp fiction for Beadle and Adams. He was the younger brother of George L. Aiken and a cousin of George L. Fox, a famous clown. In a note accompanying Aiken's portrait in the Harvard Theatrical Collection, he is briefly described as an "actor, vocalist and playwright."

Set during the American civil war and revolution, this book follows the misadventures of Catherine Vale. Unusual for the time, the novel's heroine is highly independent, often fighting her own battles and saving others. It is a classic action-adventure story packed with kidnapping, fighting, and friendship; it is the thirteenth book in a popular series.
