Synopsis History of the Reign of Philip the Second, King of Spain, Vols. 1 and 2 by : William Hickling Prescott

Discover the life and legacy of one of history's most powerful rulers in this biography of Philip II. As King of Spain, Portugal, Naples, and Sicily, Philip led his empire to new heights of influence and power, earning him the title of "The Prudent." But his reign was also marked by a highly leveraged financial policy that led to state defaults and the declaration of independence by the Dutch Republic. Despite his devout Catholicism, he faced numerous military defeats against Protestant England, including the famous defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. This book is an illuminating portrait of a complex and ambitious ruler whose impact on history is still felt today.

Synopsis International Exchange in the Early Modern Book World by : Matthew McLean

International Exchange in the Early Modern Book World presents new research on several aspects of the movement and exchange of books between countries, languages and confessions. It considers elements of the international book trade, the circulation and collection of texts, the practice of translation and the diffusion and exchange of technical and cultural knowledge. Commercial and logistical aspects of the early modern book trade are considered, as are the relationships between local markets and the internationally-minded firms which sought to meet their expectations. The barriers to the movement of books across borders – political, linguistic, confessional, cultural – are explored, as are the means by which these barriers were surmounted.

Synopsis Mytho-poetics at Work by : Rengenier Rittersma

In Mytho-poetics at Work Rengenier Rittersma offers an account of the posthumous fame of the Count of Egmont (1522-1568), whose public decapitation triggered the Dutch revolt. Drawing from numerous European sources – pamphlets, chronicles, and literature – this monograph tries to unravel why and how the alleged freedom fighter became an icon in European thought. It demonstrates that Egmont unfurled an evocative power over several centuries and cultural regions, as his name could be deliberately instrumentalized by different groups of people in order to corroborate their own confessional and political programs. In addition, this book offers the very first systematic study of the phenomenon of mytho-genesis and provides a conceptual model that can be applied to analogous historical myths.

Synopsis Jesuit Books in the Dutch Republic and its Generality Lands 1567-1773 by : Paul Begheyn SJ

This book gives a detailed description of all books, published in the Dutch Republic and its Generality Lands between 1567 and 1773 – the year in which the Society of Jesus was suppressed by Pope Clement XIV for political reasons –, written by Jesuits from the Low Countries and elsewhere. Locations of the books are given, as far as possible, as well as bibliographical sources. Many of these publications are pirate editions, mainly from France and Germany. Technical and historical introductions precede this bibliography, and several indexes and registers conclude this work. The titles show the areas in which Jesuits have been active, and indicate their influence in many fields. A similar work has never been attempted before.
