Synopsis Montclair by : City of Montclair

The Montclair area began its history as a camp for a band of Native Americans known as the Serrano Indians. After Spaniards settled California in the 1700s, the territory served as a watering stop for travelers along the Juan Bautista de Anza Trail. In 1897, the Township of Marquette was established--though renamed Monte Vista in the early 1900s--and the area then developed as a farming community for the citrus industry. After World War I, a housing and population boom transformed the town into a bedroom community, which incorporated in 1956 as the City of Monte Vista. In 1958, the community changed its name to Montclair after the U.S. Postal Service imposed mail delivery restrictions because of a conflict with another town in Northern California. Today Montclair serves its residents and the region as a transportation hub, as a leader in commercial and retail development, and by its proximity to several colleges and universities.

Synopsis America's Fire Engine by : Walter M.P. McCall

As World War II drew to a close, America's premier fire apparatus builder--the American-LaFrance Foamite Corp. of Elmira, N.Y.--bet the company's future on its radical new cab-ahead-of-engine 700 Series fire engines. In a spectacular gamble to capture the superheated postwar market, all of the company's existing products were discontinued and its customers were essentially told to "take it or leave it." This bold gamble paid off and 700 Series rigs soon filled firehouses across the nation, sweeping aside all competitors and ultimately defining the breakthrough 700 as "America's Fire Engine." This is the first comprehensive history of the game-changing 700. Individual chapters detail not only each of the eight major vehicle types but also the origins, design controversies, manufacturing, and marketing of the 700 and short-lived transitional 800 Series. The book includes a meticulously researched registry of every 700/800 series apparatus delivered, supported by many interpretive tables detailing production, specifications and major fire department fleets.

Synopsis Crown Coach Corp. by : Louk Markham

Donald Martin Brockway founded the Crown Carriage Company in 1904, the same year that Henry Ford started Ford. With no engineering department at this time, Brockway would draw the outlines of the vehicles in the dirt on the production floor as they were conceived. This informative story of Crown’s various endeavors from 1900s horse-drawn wagons through early 1990s alternative fueled buses is chronicled here and highlighted with vintage photographs and factory memorabilia including advertising items, coach emblems, and production statistics. Not left out are custom built coaches like Lockheed's mobile missile tacking station, Art Linkletter mobile video coaches, and the first air conditioned tour coach in Hawaii. The company built one of the largest fleets of fire trucks in the nation for the Los Angeles City and County fire departments and other agencies, and sent high quality custom built vehicles as far away as places like Juneau, Alaska, South America and the Middle East.
