Synopsis Critical Sites of Inclusion in India’s Higher Education by : Papia Sengupta
This book acquaints the reader to the often invisible-ized practices and policies under the rhetoric of ‘inclusion’, through theoretical and empirical analysis. It emphasizes on the complexities of education policies in a multicultural state by identifying the challenges to the idea of ‘inclusion’ illuminated through judicial interventions, policy-frameworks and everyday experiences of individuals. Higher education is imperative to empowerment in socially stratified societies marred with deep inequalities like India and many other multicultural countries. Disputes over inclusion remains a critical feature in Indian higher education sector, as it is viewed as facilitating access to economic opportunities and providing vertical mobility for individuals belonging to marginalized communities. Higher education empowers, and expands individual horizons of thought and ideas of freedom, dignity, equality, enabling individuals to participate actively in the political-sociological discourses in democratic polity. Therefore, policy makers, political theorists and educationists have been examining the question of inclusion and education as public-good. Contemporary India has witnessed an unprecedented attack on academic freedom, free exchange of ideas and expressions, challenging the very idea of inclusion and inclusiveness.

Synopsis Beyond Inclusion by : Satish Deshpande
In India, two critical aspects of public policy — social justice and higher education — have witnessed unprecedented expansion in recent years. While several programmes have been designed by the State to equalise access to higher education and implement formal inclusion, discrimination based on caste, tribe, gender, and rural location continues to exist. Focusing on the concrete experiences of these programmes, this book explores the difficulties and dilemmas that follow formal inclusion, and seeks to redress the disproportionate emphasis on principles rather than practice in the quest for equal access to higher education in India. Offering new perspectives on the debates on social mobility and merit, this volume examines a broad spectrum of educational courses, ranging from engineering, medicine and sciences to social work, humanities and the social sciences that cover all levels of higher education from undergraduate degrees to post-doctoral research. It points to various sources of social exclusion by studying a cross-section of national, elite, subaltern, and sub-regional institutions across the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Closely involved with the implementation and evaluation of affirmative action programmes, the contributors to the volume highlight the paradoxical ‘sectionalisation’ of reserved candidates, the daunting challenge of combating discrimination. Understanding the need to look beyond formal inclusion to enable substantive change, this important volume will be essential reading for scholars and teachers of sociology, education, social work, economics, public administration, and political science, besides being of great interest to policymakers and organisations concerned with education and discrimination.

Synopsis Cultures of Learning by : Suresh Babu G.S
This book looks at educational institutions and their role as sites of learning in times of moral and political chaos. It highlights the erosion of critical pedagogical traditions in universities in India and registers the ongoing responses and struggles as educational experiences. This book develops a critical approach by redefining education from the perspective of learning as a political act to experience the complex network of learning activities beyond the confines of educational institutions. It also locates caste, gender and religious hierarchies in schools and universities in India. The book explores the extremely contradictory experiences of academic spaces that have resulted in the development of uncharted sites of learning. Being mindful of these multiple strands, the authors examine the culture of learning and reflect on the space for critical learning, activism, dissent and self-reflexivity in schools and universities in India. The goal of diverse experiences of learning is to derive new meaning to the conceptions of critical pedagogy as a political act for democratising education. This transdisciplinary book will be of interest to students and researchers of education, sociology, history, political studies and public policy.

Synopsis Advancing Inclusive Excellence in Higher Education by : Shawna Patterson-Stephens
The primary aim of this text is to provide educators with specific strategies for engaging in equity and inclusion work on college campuses. We include the perspectives of faculty and staff with a range of experiences and expertise to address current topics evolving at various levels and functional areas in the academy. Rather than replicate findings and recommendations established in extant literature, we provide faculty, staff, and graduate students with the insight and tools they will require to transform established recommendations into actionable solutions and promising practices. This book offers theoretical and practical approaches to evolving diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns in higher education. The core themes of this volume center on diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in higher education. While some educators use these terms interchangeably, we define diversity as a concept that envelopes several modes of social identity, including race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, faith/non-faith affiliation, size, veteran’s status, etc. The practice of fortifying representation amongst minoritized populations without making considerations for structure and support has been the primary model for diversifying the academy for the past 40 years. Within the context of higher education and diversity, our conversation shifts beyond ensuring marginalized communities are represented. Within each chapter, the contributing authors address a wide range of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging topics that are unique to their positionality as educators in the postsecondary sector. As editors, we intentionally identify authors with diverse professional backgrounds who offer a range in their approaches to addressing emergent trends in their respective areas in higher education. In addition to submitting manuscripts that engage critical examinations of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the postsecondary sector, authors were encouraged to design supplemental material for their chapters, such as training modules, study guides, case studies, guides for utilizing critical research approaches and design, and interactive activities that can be replicated in various settings on campus (e.g., the classroom, residence halls, student organization trainings, etc.).

Synopsis Inclusivity and Indigeneity in Education for Sustainable Development by : Behera, Santosh Kumar
A major issue globally revolves around the urgent need to reshape our education system, aligning it with the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set to transform the world by 2030. These goals, comprising 17 distinct objectives and 169 targets, form an ambitious agenda that seeks to recalibrate the global landscape across social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Inclusivity and Indigeneity in Education for Sustainable Development stands as a catalyst for fostering dialogue on the interconnected realms of education, indigeneity, and sustainable development. It explores the relationships between these pillars and offers a comprehensive understanding of their transformative potential. The book emphasizes the essence of inclusivity, echoing the 'No one left behind' SDG agenda, which goes beyond mere academic discourse to foster fairness and justice. Additionally, it delves into the invaluable resource of indigenous knowledge, transmitted orally across generations, and its profound connection to sustainable development. By advocating for a shift in education, the book calls for an approach that ensures no one is left behind in the teaching and learning process. This paradigm shift is envisioned as a broad civilizational project, connecting with marginalized communities and tapping into their distinct cultural resources for crafting resilient and sustainable strategies.
