Synopsis True Police Stories of the Strange & Unexplained by : Ingrid P. Dean

Early one evening, I was patrolling alone and decided to stop a vehicle with its taillight out. I had no way of knowing that this seemingly routine decision would lead to a strange twist of fate years later... These true, first-hand accounts from law enforcement officials across the nation reveal how intuition, apparitions, UFOs, prophetic dreams, and other forces beyond our understanding have impacted them in the course of duty. The weird and unexplained experiences in this book take place in the midst of the death-defying gun battles, thrilling rescues, and heart-searing tragedies that police officers face every day—and reveal the fascinating inner lives of the heroic men and women behind the badge.

Synopsis Cop Stories by : Dick Ellwood

Television dramas, reality shows, and police procedural mystery novels may try to replicate the truth of a cops life, but sometimes the real story is strangerand more entertaining. In more than thirty engaging anecdotes, Cop Stories gives a no-holds-barred inside look at the experiences of Dick Ellwood, police officer for the Baltimore Police Department from 1965 through his retirement in 1990. He vividly depicts the teeming street life of one of the most dangerous cities in the nation. From walking a beat in his boyhood neighborhood and his adrenaline-fueled work in vice to his ascent to detective and eventually supervisor in the homicide unit, Ellwood doesnt miss a chance to get down and dirty with the gritty details you wont find on primetime TV. In addition to investigating murders, arresting prostitutes, and fighting corruption, Ellwood had his lighter moments. He arrested his childhood hero, Mickey Mantle, for public drunkenness, and was propositioned in a gay night club. He also participated in history by working the race riots of 1968 and learned more than he wanted to know about arson. Spanning the turbulent times of the sixties through the decadence of the eighties, Cop Stories reveals what it truly means to protect, serve, and live the life of a tough, dedicated cop.

Synopsis The Detective in the Dooryard by : Timothy Cotton

Tim Cotton has been a police officer for more than thirty years. The writer in him has always been drawn to the stories of the people he has met along the way. Dealing with the standard issue ne’er-do-wells as a patrol officer, homicide detective, polygraph examiner, and later as the lieutenant in charge of the criminal investigation division certainly provides an interesting backdrop—but more often he writes about the regular folks he encounters, people who need his help, or those who just want to share a joke or even a sad story. The Detective in the Dooryard is composed of stories about the people, places, and things of Maine. There are sad stories, big events, and even the very mundane, all told from the perspective of a seasoned police office and in the wry voice of a lifelong Mainer. Many of the stories will leave you chuckling, some will invariably bring tears to your eyes, but all will leave you with a profound sense of hope and positivity.

Synopsis True Blue by : Randy Sutton

After September 11, 2001 Las Vegas Police Sergeant Randy Sutton began soliciting writing from law enforcement officers-his goal being to bridge the gap between the police and those they serve, with a book that offers a broad and thoughtful look at the many facets of police life. Hundreds of active and former officers responded from all over the United States: men and women from big cities and small towns, some who had written professionally, but most for the first time. Sutton culled the selections into five categories: The Beat, Line of Duty, War Stories, Officer Down, and Ground Zero. The result is True Blue, a collection of funny, charming, exciting, haunting stories about murder investigations, missing children, bungling burglars, car chases, lonely and desperate shut-ins, routine traffic stops, officers killed in the line of duty, and the life-changing events of September 11. Here, officers reveal their emotions-fear and pride, joy and disgust, shame and love-as they recount the defining moments of their careers. In these stories, the heart and soul behind the badge shines through in unexpected ways. True Blue will change the way we think about the deeply human realm of police service.

Synopsis Country Cop by : Barry Goodson

The deputy sheriff or sheriff of a county often is perceived as the lone officer protecting the citizens of a small town. Country Cop is the riveting story of one such deputy sheriff, Barry Goodson, and his experiences with the Parker County Sheriff’s office in the 1990s and early 2000s in North Texas. Goodson was required to answer any call for service within an area roughly the size of Rhode Island (just under 1000 square miles), where a backup officer could be many miles away, and so he often patrolled and handled calls alone in a county renowned for being a haven for drug manufacturers and dealers. Goodson puts the reader in his patrol car to vicariously share what it is like to be in county law enforcement. He reveals his officer’s skills, which include the ability to identify an offender immediately, to assess that offender’s immediate intent (apparent or not), and to decide on proper action before the offender can unleash his or her attack on that deputy or against the originally intended victim. More often than not, he employed “verbal judo” to de-escalate a situation instead of drawing his gun. Calls from dispatch ranged from a simple need to clear livestock from the highways to shots fired or a 150 mph high-speed auto chase of drug dealers. More often, drug dealer attacks erupted during a perceived normal traffic stop with the offender suddenly producing a weapon, forcing Goodson to use force to subdue the individual. During one domestic violence call Goodson and another officer forced entry to stop a violent father from extreme violence against his wife and two teenage sons, but then Goodson had to intercept the wife as she lunged forward with a pair of long scissors in an attempt to stab the other officer in the back. Country Cop gives the inside story of county law enforcement and will prove a valuable resource for those in criminal justice, those who aspire to a career in law enforcement, and to all who enjoy a good police story.

Synopsis Cop Stories by : Lance Anderson

While working as a Violent Crimes detective for twenty-seven years, my investigations were the result of rapes, robberies, or suspicious deaths. I'm also an instrument-rated pilot and flew prisoner transports, narcotics surveillance, or traveled throughout the western half of the United States on Boise's most violent cases. Following retirement from Boise Police, I moved to Alaska and became an investigator for the attorney general's office. Numerous times, friends and family told me I should write a book. The cases I have chosen for this book are most unusual and will capture your attention. Truth certainly is stranger than fiction.

Synopsis Street Cop by : Robert Coover

Robert Coover's detective novelette, STREET COP, is set in a dystopian world of infectious 'living dead,' murderous robo-cops, aging street walkers, and walking streets. With drawings by Art Spiegelman, this short tale scrutinizes the arc of the American myth, exploring the working of memory in a digital world, police violence and the future of urban life. STREET COP is provocative and prophetic, asking us to interrogate the line between a condemnable system and a sympathetic individual.

Synopsis The Funniest Cop Stories Ever by : Scott Baker

Cops are the people who see and hear it all. They work at one of the world's most dangerous jobs, but it's also one of the most entertaining. When their lives are at risk-and even when they aren't--cops encounter constant weirdness and stupidity in human behavior. The Funniest Cop Stories Ever collects the strangest, most amusing stories about stupid crooks, bungled crimes, and station-house banter. A true look at what life is like behind the badge, the tales in The Funniest Cop Stories Ever were collected by real-life ex-New York City policeman Scott Baker and coauthor Tom Philbin. Anecdotes are told by the real-life cops who experienced them and include: A foot chase after a dwarf who karate-kicked his girlfriend's door and assaulted her while wearing a tuxedo and carrying a violin case. A beggar who ended people's pay phone calls so he could demand their extra spare change. A narcotics bust on a guy who claimed the crack cocaine--and his pants--didn't belong to him.
