Synopsis Cooking from the Italians of Newark, New Jersey an Ethnic Experience by : Barone Callah Elizabeth Barone Callahan
Newark, New Jersey was a thriving Italian American community with ties to southern Italy and Sicily, with waves of immigrants coming from 1870 -1950. According to New Jersey census data from 2000 Italian Americans are the largest ethnic group in the state. There are two million citizens in the state that claim Italian descent. Many of these residents have ancestors who lived in Newark's First Ward. The purpose of writing this book is both biographical and cultural and also the need to preserve recipes as a link to the history of a neighborhood that vanished five decades ago. Many recipes have been verbally passed down and the primary focus of the book is to preserve them for future generations. Although, the book is original to a specific geographical area the peasant food described in the recipes has become very popular in upscale Italian restaurants. The food is healthy and delicious. The "old neighborhood" was teaming with specialty shops including grocery stores, cheese shops, bread stores, bakeries, meat markets, a chicken market, and colorful peddlers. There was a pizza parlor that always used linen tablecloths and napkins. Every house had a "stoop" (colloquial name for small front porch) and on every "stoop" was a favorite chair often carried down several flights of stairs and a Nona or Zia would be seated watching over the neighborhood. These immigrants took great pride in their homes and community and knew everyone on the block and provided an informal but effective "neighborhood watch." When they were not sitting on the "stoop" they could be seen sweeping the sidewalks. One ritual that has faded from the experience of Italian Americans is Sunday Dinner with "Sunday Gravy". It was a time when families sat and ate at a leisurely pace with grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins gathered in one home. It is hoped that COOKING FROM THE ITALIANS OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY - AN ETHNIC EXPERIENCE will provide each reader with the collective memories of sitting at the table with family.

Synopsis The Italian Americans by : Francis N. Elmi
The Italian Americans: A Multicultural View exemplifies a meaningful attempt to inform readers about the Italian Americans’ various experiences in the United States. Unlike many works on the Italian American experience, this unique text explains why popular negative notions of Italian American life are inaccurate. Moreover, this book provides useful information to help the reader become more cognizant of not only the Italian American experience, but the ethnic American experience in general. The eleven chapters of this book are an important beginning for the reader to become informed of the Italian American sociohistorical experiences, including the oppression, exploitation, and discrimination in the United States, past and present.

Synopsis Nonna's House by : Jody Scaravella
This beautiful collection of food and nostalgia features great traditions from the heart of Italy, with delicious recipes and colorful stories from the internationally celebrated grandmothers of Enoteca Maria—a one-of-a-kind Italian restaurant where a rotating cast of nonnas are the star chefs. Enoteca Maria takes great home cooking seriously. At this intimate, hospitable restaurant on Staten Island, all the cooking is done by ten nonnas (grandmothers), drawing on their own family recipes, handed down for generations, which reflect their regional traditions. Here are their delicious homemade pastas, risottos, desserts, and more, which have foodies from all over the world taking the ferry to the forgotten borough for an authentic taste of Italy. Beautiful full-color photography captures the fresh, distinctive flavors of these surprising dishes. Nonna Cristina shares her beautiful Risotto with Strawberries, Black Pepper, and Parmesan; Nonna Margherita offers delectable Stuffed Peppers with Pine Nuts and Raisins; and Nonna Teresa shows off her prize-winning Meat and Cheese Lasagna. Nonna Elvira whips up her peerless Linguine with Cuttlefish and Ink; Adelina creates a savory Tagliatelle with Pumpkin, Sausage, and Chestnuts; and Rosaria makes handmade Spaghetti alla Chitarra with Cherry Tomatoes and Porcini Mushrooms. Nonna Carmelina shares her classic Potato Pie with Ham, Salami, and Mozzarella; Rosa confides her nonna’s secret recipe for Rabbit with Sage; and Nina sautés Chicken alla Capricciosa, with prosciutto and mushrooms. Nonna Francesca launches the book with advice on the time-honored art of preserving everything from olives to soppressata. With its utterly delicious tastes of grandmother’s kitchen, Nonna’s House is a legacy of flavors passed down through generations, now captured here forever. Restaurant founder Jody Scaravella says it best: “If I have a choice between a three-star Michelin chef’s restaurant and Grandma’s, I’m going to Grandma’s. I’m going to the source.”
