Synopsis Emissions From Combustion Processes - An ACS Environmental Chemistry Division Book by : Ronald O. Kagel

Topics discussed in this book cover all aspects of combustion from the mechanics and formation of toxic pollutants and their transport/fate in the environment to emission abatement and risk assessment. Leading experts in the field have contributed information from studies ranging from fundamental bench-scale investigations to risk assessment of existing large-scale municipal incinerators. This book will be a valuable reference for scientists, engineers, administrators and environmentalists who must deal with the complex issues of waste management and environmental protection.

Synopsis Sustainable Alternative Syngas Fuel by : Chaouki Ghenai

The development and use of sustainable and alternative fuels (syngas, biogas, biodiesel, bio-oil, hydrogen) derived from sources other than petroleum is needed due to the limited fossil fuel resources, the need for reduction of atmospheric greenhouse gas emissions, energy security, and to meet the future high energy demand due to population growth. New alternative fuels that can be produced locally and derived from renewable sources will be more sustainable compared to fossil fuels. Alternative and renewable fuels can be produced using different thermochemical and bio-chemical processes. Gasification is a thermochemical process used to produce syngas fuel (mainly hydrogen and carbon dioxide) from renewable (biomass) and conventional (coal) sources. The syngas fuels produced from the gasification process can be used for different applications: power generation (combustion of syngas fuel in gas turbine engines), heating, and transportation (internal combustion engines). This book intends to provide the reader with an overview of the current technologies, methods, and strategies of syngas fuel production, characterization, and application.

Synopsis Advanced Technology for the Conversion of Waste into Fuels and Chemicals by : Anish Khan

Advanced Technology for the Conversion of Waste into Fuels and Chemicals: Volume 2: Chemical Processes is the second of two volumes by the editors (the first volume is Advanced Technology for the Conversion of Waste into Fuels and Chemicals: Biological Processes). This volume presents advanced techniques and combined techniques used to convert energy to waste, including combustion, gasification, paralysis, anaerobic digestion and fermentation. The title focuses on solid waste conversion to fuel and energy, presenting advances in the design, manufacture and application of conversion technologies. Contributors from physics, chemistry, metallurgy, engineering and manufacturing present a truly trans-disciplinary picture of waste to energy conversion. Huge volumes of solid waste are produced globally while, at the same time, huge amounts of energy are produced from fossil fuels. Waste to energy (WTE) technologies are developing rapidly, holding out the potential to make clean, sustainable power from waste material. These WTE procedures incorporate various methods and blended approaches, and present an enormous opportunity for clean, sustainable energy. - Presents the latest advances in waste to energy techniques for converting solid waste to valuable fuel and energy - Brings together contributors from physics, chemistry, metallurgy, engineering and the manufacturing industry - Includes advanced techniques such as combustion, gasification, paralysis, anaerobic digestion and fermentation - Goes far beyond municipal waste, including the recouping of valuable energy from a variety of industrial waste materials

Synopsis Environmental Aspects of Fluidized-bed Combustion of Refinery-generated Waste Fuels by : A. Luckos

Refuse derived fuels (RDF) such as pitches and cokes, generated during processing of crude oils, contain mostly crude oil metals and sulphur, and therefore require special consideration for further use. Currently these RDFs are being stockpiled because their combustion using conventional technology is problematic. However, stockpiling is unlikely to be an acceptable long-term form of disposal due to increasingly stringent environmental legislation.^L^LFluidized-bed combustion (FBC) is a proven technology for disposing of a wide variety of fossil fuels, biomass and waste materials in an environmentally acceptable manner. Fluidized-bed boilers are well-suited to unreactive, high-sulphur RDFs such as pitches and petroleum cokes from heavy-oil upgrading processes. They are also capable of combusting various refinery waste sludges and gases which, when funnelled to a single unit, may offer additional economic advantages to refineries.^L^LThis paper describes tests carried out in the University of British Columbia's 152x152 mm circulating fluidized-bed pilot plant burning CANMET pitch and Conoco delayed coke. The main objective of these tests was to investigate the influence of operating conditions on combustion efficiency, pollutant emissions and the fate of the heavy metals during combustion. Proximate and ultimate analyses of tested waste fuels are given in Table 1. A full description of the experimental facility, operating conditions and results obtained are presented by Grace ^Iet al^R. (1989), Brereton ^Iet al^R. (1991) Legros ^Iet al^R. (1991) and Brereton ^Iet al^R. (1995).
