When thinking of the leaders of Asia who brought landmark prosperity to their respective nations from the second half of the 20th century, two leaders immediately come to mind: late Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore and Dr. Mahathir Mohamad of Malaysia. Bangladesh's own Sheikh Mujibur Rahman did not have time to turn Bangladesh into a prosperous nation, but he was the architect of the Bangladesh nation, which sacrificed three million men and women, and two hundred thousand women lost dignity in a liberation war in 1971. These leaders had one thing in common, they had visions about prosperity and freedom. Singapore and Malaysia realized late Prime Minister Lee and Prime Minister Mahthir's visions in their life time. Mahathir is still living. Mujib too had a vision for the prosperity of his people. His vision was, in his words, "I want to make Bangladesh the Switzerland of Asia". In other words, Sheikh Mujib wanted to make Bangladesh a Golden Bengal, a member of the OECD nations. Since the dark days of 1975 when he was killed by assassins' bullets, the nation has been looking for opportunity to realize Mujib's visions. Finally, the opportunity came to his daughter Sheikh Hasina in 1996 and with a break of next five years at last she got momentum in 2009 for taking Bangladesh to prosperity. The incumbent government since 2009 has been doing extraordinarily well to maintain and fulfill all the requirements of a "middle income" status which was awarded in March 2018. Sheikh Hasina has recently said, "Bangladesh will achieve the goals to become a middle income nation by 2021, three years ahead of the deadline set by the World Bank. She has been working tirelessly for transforming Bangladesh into a "developed" nation by 2041. Indeed, she is a visionary too for realizing the visions of Mujib by making Bangladesh the Switzerland of Asia. Her vision 2021 is coming to an end in two years' time and it is clear now world-wide on the nation's development agenda in place to 2041, coinciding with UN agenda 2030 (Sustainable Development Goals).

This book discusses the subject of pathways to a sustainable economy through science and technology innovations which are regarded as the important components of the ‘4th Industrial Revolution’. The volume has been developed from Bangladesh’s ‘Vision 2041’ agenda which includes development actions needed to catch up with more developed nations. Most importantly, the goals of the ‘Vision 2041’ have been taken from the dreams of the architect of independent Bangladesh, Bangabandhu (Friends of Bengal) Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. His dream was to make Bangladesh the Switzerland of Asia. The Father of Bangladesh Nation was killed by assassins’ bullets along with his most of the family members in August 1975. After his death, the nation moved backwards while recovering from nine months of liberation post war in 1971. Between 1975 and 1990 Bangladesh was ruled by military and quasi military governments. Bangladesh established a true democratic regime in 1996 with Sheikh Mujib’s daughter, Sheikh Hasina, who formed the government after 21 years with a mandate to realise the dreams of her father. Sheikh Hasina, had her own 20 year vision for Bangladesh, called, ‘Vision 2021’, with plans to make the nation poverty free by 2021. After a pause between 2001 and 2008, Sheikh Hasina returned to power in 2009. Under her consecutive three terms she brought Bangladesh back on track and Bangladesh is one of the nations which reduced poverty half under MDGs by 2015. During her third consecutive term Sheikh Hasina, is on the way to transforming Bangladesh into a ‘middle income’ nation by 2021. This volume aims to identify and mitigate the challenges of ‘4th Industrial Revolution’ investigating the areas of science and technology innovations for Bangladesh and for other parts of the world keeping in mind establishing a sustainable economy under UN agendas to 2030 (SDGs). Climate change poses serious threats to inclusive economic progress and poverty reduction. Strong countermeasures are required to increase the capacity of low-income people to mitigate their risk exposure to the impacts of climate change. Central pillars in planning for sustainable development and poverty alleviation must include vulnerability assessments, appropriate adaptation measures, and resilience-smart investments. This means placing climate change adaptation and resilience at the center of overall development policy. Coping with Climate Change in the Sundarbans contributes to this effort by synthesizing multiyear, multidisciplinary climate change studies on the Sundarbans—the world’s largest remaining contiguous mangrove forest and wetland of international importance, as well as home to some of South Asia’s poorest and most vulnerable communities. The studies’ findings indicate that, in a changing climate, sea-level rise, storm-surge intensification, and water salinization will alter the Sundarbans ecosystem significantly. The ripple effect of these changes will have multifaceted adverse impacts on the nature-dependent livelihoods, health, and nutrition of nearby communities. Elevated health risks, reduced land and labor productivity, and increased exposure to storms, floods, droughts, and other extreme events will make escape from poverty more difficult. Families in the Sundarbans are on the front line of these changes. Their experience and adaptation signal future decisions by hundreds of millions of families worldwide who will face similar threats from progressive sea-level rise. This research lays the technical foundation for developing a better understanding of the changes the Sundarbans currently faces, including responses of the ecosystem and human communities.
