Synopsis China’s Wine Industry. A Brief History, Facts And Figures by : Melanie Bobik
Akademische Arbeit aus dem Jahr 2010 im Fachbereich BWL - Offline-Marketing und Online-Marketing, Note: 1,3, Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: China is turning into one of the world’s largest, most lucrative food and beverage markets. With a growing middle class, the demand for premium lifestyle products is constantly increasing. A new generation of consumers, typically located in urban areas, is emerging, with more disposable income and a greater awareness and willingness to pay for high quality, often imported products – including wine. Wine has become “fashionable” as a symbol of social status and this trend is likely to continue. Further, the health benefits associated with red wine in particular, have convinced some consumers to switch from traditional Chinese alcoholic beverages to grape wine. Although China traditionally is a rice-wine-consuming country and unlike in many Western countries, grape wine is considered a luxury product, the grape wine market has grown rapidly since its emergence in the mid 1990s, with still wine being the most lucrative. According to a recent survey, in 2009 the Chinese wine market generated total revenues of US$ 7,2 billion which constitutes a compound annual growth rate of 5,3% for the period from 2005 to 2009 . As wine consumption in China is closely related to income, there is no end in sight to this positive trend.

Synopsis Planet of the Grapes by : Robert Sechrist
A fascinating and comprehensive introduction to the geography, culture, and history of wine that identifies the significance of this simple beverage throughout human history and today. Wine was one the key founding foods of Western culture (bread and oil being the other two). It has played a key role in human history for thousands of years, having been used for enjoyment, rituals, and religious purposes; today, the production and consumption of wine is a billion-dollar industry that plays an important role in the global economy. Planet of the Grapes: A Geography of Wine provides an interesting and accessible lens through which students can learn about geography, culture, society, history, religion, and the environment. The chapters cover the historical geography of wine, document how drinking wine has often been condemned as a vice, and describe wines by region and type, thereby providing a cultural geography of wine. Readers will learn about the historical geography of wine, terroir (the environmental conditions that affect grape crops), grape biogeography, the process of winemaking from a geographic perspective, the economic global significance of the wine trade, the ongoing love-hate relationship between wine and government, and what makes individual wine regions distinct. The content is written to be comprehensible to individuals without detailed previous knowledge about wine but provides detailed information and insight that wine connoisseurs will find engaging. Additionally, through the story of wine comes a unique telling of the social transformations in America that have resulted from sources such as anti-immigrant sentiment, pseudoscience, and censorship.

Synopsis Around the World in Eighty Wines by : Mike Veseth
Inspired by Jules Verne’s classic adventure tale, celebrated editor-in-chief of The Wine Economist Mike Veseth takes his readers Around the World in Eighty Wines. The journey starts in London, Phileas Fogg’s home base, and follows Fogg’s itinerary to France and Italy before veering off in search of compelling wine stories in Syria, Georgia, and Lebanon. Every glass of wine tells a story, and so each of the eighty wines must tell an important tale. We head back across Northern Africa to Algeria, once the world’s leading wine exporter, before hopping across the sea to Spain and Portugal. We follow Portuguese trade routes to Madeira and then South Africa with a short detour to taste Kenya’s most famous Pinot Noir. Kenya? Pinot Noir? Really! The route loops around, visiting Bali, Thailand, and India before heading north to China to visit Shangri-La. Shangri-La? Does that even exist? It does, and there is wine there. Then it is off to Australia, with a detour in Tasmania, which is so cool that it is hot. The stars of the Southern Cross (and the title of a familiar song) guide us to New Zealand, Chile, and Argentina. We ride a wine train in California and rendezvous with Planet Riesling in Seattle before getting into fast cars for a race across North America, collecting more wine as we go. Pause for lunch in Virginia to honor Thomas Jefferson, then it’s time to jet back to London to tally our wines and see what we have learned. Why these particular places? What are the eighty wines and what do they reveal? And what is the surprise plot twist that guarantees a happy ending for every wine lover? Come with us on a journey of discovery that will inspire, inform, and entertain anyone who loves travel, adventure, or wine.
