Synopsis The Emergence of Charismatic Business Leadership by : Richard S. Tedlow

Harvard Business School Emeritus professor Richard S. Tedlow examines how the role of the business leader has changed since World War II. A handful of individuals have helped transform the face of modern-day leadership, making charisma essential to the role. Through Tedlow's in-depth accounts of modern business history, we see how charismatic leadership enables the creation of revolutionary new products and makes it possible for former outsiders to attain power and influence. Tedlow shows the skills and tools necessary to oversee a successful business and become a charismatic business leader.

Synopsis Three Seasons of Charismatic Leadership by : Tamás Czövek

This research is an investigation into the charismatic leadership of Saul, David, and Solomon. Regarding methodology the study is a synchronic reading and is keen to demonstrate the theology explicit or implicit in the text. This study assumes that charismatic leaders emerge in crisis situations and in order to resolve the crisis by the charisma granted by God. In regard to Saul, the book argues that Saul proved himself a charismatic leader as long as acting resolutely and independently from Samuel, his mentor. He failed, however, because in Samuel's shadow he could not establish himself as a charismatic leader. David was successful because of his autonomy and resolution. Also, he was a successful charismatic leader as long as he remained independent. King David, however, was gradually sidelined by Joab. Another major theme of the David narrative is the clash between the concepts of charismatic military leadership and that of oriental kingship. David's military leadership and the charisma related to it are constantly challenged by the concept of oriental kingship. Although at his emergence he had lacked charisma, Solomon wisely chose the leadership skills needed to lead Israel. Attention is, however, drawn to the tensions between Solomon's leadership benefiting Israel and the royal pretension manifest in royal projects. The relationship of the new charismatic leader with the old leader is scrutinized: how the new leader is appointed, how he emerges, how the old persists—in short the transition and succession in leadership. An evaluation of the activity of the charismatic follows; could he resolve the crisis from which he emerged and for which he was granted God's spirit? To what extent were these leaders charismatic?

Synopsis Transitions from Charismatic Rule by : Bert Hoffmann

For theories of political succession and charismatic authority, the almost half-century long rule of Fidel Castro presents an extraordinary test case since Fidel in July 2006 handed over power quot;temporarilyquot; to his deputy and brother Rauacute;l. On the background of Max Weber's work on charismatic rule, the paper analyzes the way in which the Cuban leadership has responded to the succession question and identifies four aspects in which it differs from the succession problems typically attributed to charismatic rule: Cuba's longstanding exceptionalism regarding the quot;second manquot; behind the leader; the succession during the life-time of the leader with a sui generis modus of quot;cohabitationquot; between the outgoing and the incoming leader; the routinization of charisma which domestically allows a bureaucratic succession model with the Communist Party, rather than any individual, being postulated as Fidel Castro's heir; and as a correlate to the latter, the ritual transmission of Fidel's charisma to a heir beyond the nation-state, Venezuela's Hugo Chaacute;vez, as the new charismatic leader to continue Fidel Castro's universal revolutionary mission.

Synopsis Selectors by : John E. Jayne

Though the search for good selectors dates back to the early twentieth century, selectors play an increasingly important role in current research. This book is the first to assemble the scattered literature into a coherent and elegant presentation of what is known and proven about selectors--and what remains to be found. The authors focus on selection theorems that are related to the axiom of choice, particularly selectors of small Borel or Baire classes. After examining some of the relevant work of Michael and Kuratowski & Ryll-Nardzewski and presenting background material, the text constructs selectors obtained as limits of functions that are constant on the sets of certain partitions of metric spaces. These include selection theorems for maximal monotone maps, for the subdifferential of a continuous convex function, and for some geometrically defined maps, namely attainment and nearest-point maps. Assuming only a basic background in analysis and topology, this book is ideal for graduate students and researchers who wish to expand their general knowledge of selectors, as well as for those who seek the latest results.

Synopsis North Korea by : Heonik Kwon

This timely, pathbreaking study of North Korea’s political history and culture sheds invaluable light on the country’s unique leadership continuity and succession. Leading scholars Heonik Kwon and Byung-Ho Chung begin by tracing Kim Il Sung’s rise to power during the Cold War. They show how his successor, his eldest son, Kim Jong Il, sponsored the production of revolutionary art to unleash a public political culture that would consolidate Kim’s charismatic power and his own hereditary authority. The result was the birth of a powerful modern theater state that sustains North Korean leaders’ sovereignty now to a third generation. In defiance of the instability to which so many revolutionary states eventually succumb, the durability of charismatic politics in North Korea defines its exceptional place in modern history. Kwon and Chung make an innovative contribution to comparative socialism and postsocialism as well as to the anthropology of the state. Their pioneering work is essential for all readers interested in understanding North Korea’s past and future, the destiny of charismatic power in modern politics, the role of art in enabling this power.
