Synopsis Challenging Minds by : Lynne Kelly
All too often, gifted and advanced learners are just accelerated, without fueling the creative thinking and problem solving that they are capable of. This book bursts with thrilling, mind-stretching enrichment activities designed to stimulate higher level thinking for gifted students in grades 5-12. Challenge the learners in your classroom to explore and evaluate assumptions they make about their world; conduct surveys about current, hot issues and analyze the results; or solve complex logic mysteries in small learning groups. These activities and lessons vary in length from one class period to several weeks, and have enough activities to be used all year. Skills are developed by using: creative research ideas, creative thinking tasks, daring debates, blueprints for business, and philosophical problems. For example, in one activity, students are asked to review various classification systems from areas as diverse as biology and history. Then, they discuss and identify the various steps needed to create a classification system. Next, students consider and discuss various examples about humor, then create, test, and evaluate their own classification system for humor. Finally, students produce their own examples of humor and classify them according to the system they have created. One of the features that makes this book outstanding is that each activity has been field-tested for at least five years in secondary classrooms. The book and each lesson in it provide in-depth information and advice for the classroom teacher. Grades 5-12

Synopsis Complicated Minds by : Dianne Haaland
About the Book There is a saying: If you know one Alzheimer’s case, you know only one Alzheimer’s case. Each experience with Alzheimer’s, for both the patient and their caregiver, is filled with unique struggles and complications, though one thing is always certain: Dealing with Alzheimer’s is never easy. In this memoir, Dianne Haaland recalls her ordeal as a wife and caregiver of someone whose mental state was in swift decline, chronicling the nightmares that came with it regarding for-profit care facilities, unethical lawyers, greedy children, and constant medical scares. About the Author Dianne Haaland is a former English and business teacher in South Dakota and Colorado high schools. She received an MBA from Colorado State University and spent fourteen years as a financial analyst with a Fortune 500 company. Both her husband and she earned several real estate certifications. In an effort to give her children and families some peace of mind, Dianne is looking forward to moving to an independent living facility for herself and her husband, where she will continue to write, read, exercise, and enjoy visits from friends and family.

Synopsis Inspiring Middle School Minds by : Judith A. Willis
Teaching adolescents can be quite challenging. Dr. Judy Willis, a neurologist and teacher, explains the inner workings of the adolescent brain. She uses the findings of brain research in her classroom to explain how parents and teachers can trigger untapped inspiration in students. Middle school education has often been a "black hole" for gifted students, seldom providing adequate challenge. By understanding how the brain works, however, we can make learning for all youngsters exciting and stimulating. The information and advice in this book will help parents and teachers design positive and rewarding learning experiences that will then be stored in long-term memory rather than "deleted" or "filtered out."

Synopsis Challenging Units for Gifted Learners by : Kenneth J. Smith
Gifted students have the potential to learn material earlier and faster, to handle more abstraction, and to solve complex problems better. This potential, however, needs stimulating experiences from home and school or it will not unfold. These books are designed to help teachers provide the engaging curricula that will nurture this potential in school. The Science book includes a medical simulation in which teams of students work as doctors to diagnose patients' cases, a food science project in which students use a variety of information-gathering techniques to learn how nutrition impacts performance, a hands-on study of human memory and expertise, and a study of the physics of sports. Grades 6-8

Synopsis Engaging and Challenging Gifted Students by : Jenny Grant Rankin
Though nearly 5 million students can be characterized as gifted and talented in the United States, many exceptional learners “fly under the radar.” Because they are not appropriately challenged in the general classroom, they never meet their full potential—in school or in life. Author Jenny Grant Rankin equips general classroom teachers with the information and strategies they need to spot, advocate for, engage, and challenge exceptional learners in their classrooms. Learn how to * recognize the challenges of each child, * identify the five unexpected traits of exceptional learners, and * adjust your teaching to meet the needs of all learners. Filled with useful strategies and poignant personal accounts, this book gives you the “meat” of what you need to prevent those students who need to be challenged and engaged from slipping through the cracks.
