In contemporary societies, identities are believed to be more fluid, less easily definable, demanding new articulations and new dialogues. However, some communities seem unable to engage in a dialogue traversing cultural borders and fostering the appreciation of diversity as the cornerstone of a more just and humane world. Is intercultural exchange truly possible in societies riddled with tensions of every sort? Multicultural and intercultural interactions may have given us the opportunity to enrich our understanding of the other, but they have also posed new challenges for education practices and educational politics. This collection of studies addresses some of the challenges posed by diversity and inequality in the construction of inclusive societies.

Social housing is a complex system integrated by social, economic, political and city making processes. Social practices in the called social production of the habitat provide clues to understand an alternative way to approach housing solutions in which several dimensions coexist. Through the rationalization of social (self-management), economic (social economy) and urban principles, it was possible the construction of typologies to document and evaluate 3 case studies in Latin America. This book provides a foundation for future research and conception of social housing policies and programs.

This volume examines the ways in which the violent legacies of the twentieth century continue to affect the concept of the nation. Through a study of three societies’ commemoration of notorious episodes of 1930s state violence, the author considers the manner in which attention to the state violence authoritarianism, and exclusions of the last century have resulted in challenges to dominant conceptions of the nation. Based on extensive ethnographic research in El Salvador, Spain, and the Dominican Republic, Remembering Violence focuses on new public sites of memory, such as museum exhibitions, monuments, and commemorations – powerful loci for representing ideas about the nation – and explores the responses of various actors – civil society, government, and diasporic citizens – as well as those of UN and other international agencies invested in new nation-building goals. With attention to the ways in which memory practices explain ongoing national exclusions and contemporary efforts to contest them, this book will appeal to scholars across the social sciences and humanities with interests in public memory and commemoration.

This book discusses the building of comprehensive community support systems, which constitutes a key issue in social security reforms in Japan. The book comprises three parts: (I) Mapping Social Security in Japan, (II) Community-Based Integrated Care Systems in Japan, and (III) A Prospect of Community-Based Inclusive Society in Japan. The chapters in this book were composed on the basis of research into community-based integrated care systems and community-based inclusive society, conducted by members of the Association of Japanese Geographers’ Study Group “Regional Issues Related to the Birthrate Decline and Population Aging.” Choosing local governments with different regional characteristics, the authors conducted empirical research to uncover the characteristics of comprehensive community support systems, building processes, and challenges in the respective local governments. Non-Japanese readers will acquire an understanding of the characteristics of social security and the trends of the reforms in Japan. To support its use as a reference book, chapters in Part I include numerous maps and figures with the themes of welfare, medical care, and health levels in Japan.

Focusing on contemporary childhood disability issues, and relevant to the lived experiences of disabled children and young people and their families, this book addresses themes such as transition, identity, education, inclusion, and service provision. It also includes insightful contributions on participatory research and practice with disabled children and young people, including an emphasis on capability, voice, and communicative spaces for those with life limiting and more severe levels of impairment. How to Write and Publish Effectively: Writing Support Group Guidelines This report describes a writing support and accountability program voluntarily organized by and for a grassroots community in South Asia. Organized early 2020 -- which happened to be in the middle of the first wave of the Covid-19 global pandemic -- this program recruited 24 scholars from a pool of 216 applicants from across South Asia (Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Nepal, and Pakistan). A sign up survey asked interested scholars, who were invited through networking/ snowballing on social media, to describe a research project from which they would like to write an academic journal manuscript, learning and implementing writing skills along the way. While they were encouraged to share an empirical research project with a social impact in mind, theoretical projects were also included.
