The Department of Building Technology at the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft is studying and developing cardboard as a potential building material on a broad, systematic and where possible comprehensive basis. An exploratory phase from 2003 to 2005 - including an outdoor pilot structure (multi-shed), a pilot pavilion accommodating, an exhibition, workshops on resistance to fire and to damp, a first patent (KCPK), the design of an interior wall (Besin) and the publication of this book - was concluded by an international symposium attended by both the paper industry and the building industry. This publication comprises the report on that symposium.

Synopsis Shigeru Ban by : Andrew Barrie

What role does architecture play in the face of natural disaster? What sort of ideas and what sort of materials be used to restart a community? How can the new draw from the old? One of the world's leading architects, Shigeru Ban, has confronted those issues in the wake of natural disasters around the globe. In 2012, he is working in Christchurch to build his largest structure ever--a 'Cardboard Cathedral' to stand in for the cathedral at Christchurch's heart, which suffered devastating damage in the 2011 earthquake. Ban is the most important international architect to have worked in New Zealand and the building will be or enormous local and international interest. Written by architect and leading scholar of Japanese architecture, Professor Andrew Barrie and fully illustrated with architectural drawings and newly commissioned photography of the environment, the people and the building, this book will offer visual and verbal insight into great architecture and its social role. This will be a book for anyone interested in contemporary architecture and to all those looking toward what the future might hold for Christchurch.

Synopsis Architecture and Modelbuilding by : Alexander Schilling

Architectural models are used at various stages of a project. As working models they support the design process: they are made up from time to time using simple materials, such as cardboard, without any attempt at accuracy, and continue to be adjusted and added to as the ideas and the design progress. The point here is to swiftly check a design idea, to allow it to be continued or dismissed. Presentational models are more involved; at this stage the design has been completed and the purpose of the model is to convey the ideas to the potential user in a clear and easy-to-understand way. The book Architecture and Model Building includes outstanding examples explaining the possibilities of this medium and, at the same time, provides comprehensive information on materials and techniques.
