Synopsis Burnet and Blavatsky on Anaxagoras' Ideas and Impact by : John Burnet, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

Anaxagoras believed that since the spiritual prototypes of all things are differentiations of Father Æther, the One Element, all things are essentially the same. The learned astronomer explained openly that which was taught by Pythagoras secretly, regarding the movements of the planets, the eclipses of the sun and moon, etc. He also taught the theory of Chaos, on the principle that “nothing comes from nothing.” Like all great philosophers, Anaxagoras expounded the doctrine of parallel evolution, of spirit and matter. And like Pythagoras, Plato, and Socrates, he too was persecuted by his compatriots, for free speech was not tolerated in the birthplace of “democracy.” The rabble revelled in exacting far harsher punishment on their Spiritual Teachers, than Karma metes out to those who break the vow of silence.

Synopsis All Avataras are identical, World-saviours grown out from a single seed by : Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

There is a mysterious principle in Nature called Maha-Vishnu, which is not the God of that name, but a principle which contains Bija, the seed of Avatarism, i.e., the potency and cause of such divine incarnations. All the World-Saviours, the Bodhisattvas and the Avataras, are the trees of salvation grown out from the one seed. Whether it be called Adi-Buddha or Maha-Vishnu, it is all the same. In this profound esoteric sense, Lord Buddha is an incarnation of Maha-Vishnu. The Avatara is an appearance, one which may be termed a special illusion within the natural illusion that reigns on the planes under the sway of Maya; he is reborn consciously, at his will and pleasure; the units of the common herd unconsciously follow the great law of dual evolution. Thus all Avataras are one and the same: Sons of their Father, in a direct descent and line — the Father, one of Seven Flames, becomes the Son. Father and Son are One, in Eternity. The illusive avataric form having neither past nor future, because it had neither previous incarnation nor will it have subsequent rebirths, has naught to do with Karma, which has therefore no hold on it. Gautama Buddha is more than an Avatara. Though an Avatara in one sense, Gautama is a true human Jivanmukta, owing his position to his outstanding personal merit. His case is an exceptional one, and stems from the occult powers of the High Initiate who, before entering into the state of Nirvana, can cause his “remains” to stay on earth. Buddha and Jesus tower like giants in the history of mankind, in the realm of the spiritual. It is in their image that some enlightened men are born (when a specific humanitarian object is in view) and hypostatically animated by their divine prototypes, are reproduced again and again by the mysterious Powers that control and guide the destinies of our world. Not only does this statement apply to prominent characters in history, in general, but also to men of genius, to every remarkable man of the age, who soars beyond the common herd with some abnormally developed special capacity in him, leading to the progress and good of mankind. Since then the “Man of Sorrows” has returned more than once, unknown to, and undiscovered by, his blind followers. Since then, the “Son of God” has been most cruelly crucified, daily and hourly, by the Churches founded in his name. Even the Apostles, only half-initiated, failed to tarry for their Master and, not recognizing him, spurned him every time he returned. Special cases conferring permanent Theophania, i.e., the presence of God in man, a divine incarnation. A person of a sufficiently clean vessel might be selected for special purposes by his personal God, the Fountainhead of his Monad, who thus becomes his in-dweller. Such persons remain in our sphere and within human attraction and reach; and thus it is that not only a Buddha, a Shankacharya, or a Jesus that animate several persons at one and the same time, but even the principles of a high Adept may be animating the outward tabernacles of worthy mortals.

Synopsis Why the Secrecy of Initiates? by : Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

The first, semi-divine, pure and spiritual Race of Humanity had the “truths of God,” and lived up to them, and their ideals. They preserved them, so long as there was hardly any evil, and hence scarcely a possible abuse of that knowledge and those truths. But evolution and the gradual fall into materiality is also one of the “truths” and also one of the laws of “God.” And as mankind progressed, and became with every generation more of the earth, earthly, the individuality of each temporary Ego began to assert itself. It is personal selfishness that develops and urges man on to abuse of his knowledge and power. And selfishness is a human building, whose windows and doors are ever wide open for every kind of iniquity to enter into man’s soul. Few were the men during the early adolescence of mankind, and fewer still are they now, who feel disposed to put into practice Pope’s forcible declaration that he would tear out his own heart, if it had no better disposition than to love only himself, and laugh at all his neighbours. Hence the necessity of gradually taking away from man the divine knowledge and power, which became with every new human cycle more dangerous as a double-edged weapon, whose evil side was ever threatening one’s neighbour, and whose power for good was lavished freely only upon self. Those few “elect” whose inner natures had remained unaffected by their outward physical growth, thus became in time the sole guardians of the mysteries revealed, passing the knowledge to those most fit to receive it, and keeping it inaccessible to others. Reject this explanation from the Secret Teachings, and the very name of Religion will become synonymous with deception and fraud.

Synopsis Peter, not an Initiate, was the enemy of Paul by : Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

Peter and Paul are archetypes of two Opposing Powers in Christianity The Secret Doctrine preached by Jesus has been disfigured by the Fathers beyond recognition. What the Fathers fought for was not Truth, but their own interpretations and unwarranted assertions. From the early days of Marcion of Sinope, the primitive Church has been split into two opposing parties: one viewing Christianity as a Hebrew institution and law, a narrow faction and extension of Judaism; the other, striving to replace Mosaic law with universal compassion and true brotherhood. Peter was the representative of the former; Paul, of the latter. The mission of Jesus, according to Marcion, was to abrogate the Jewish “Lord,” who “was opposed to the God and Father of Jesus Christ as Matter is to Spirit, impurity to purity.” The Apostle of Circumcision made his mission to persecute the Apostle of the Gentiles. After denying the very existence of Simon Magus, the Roman Church merged his individuality entirely in that of Paul, whose Epistles were secretly as well as openly calumniated and opposed by Peter, and charged with containing “dysnoëtic learning.” Saul in the flesh was the function and parallel of Chr?stos. Paul freed from earthly obligations, the function and parallel of Jesus Chrestos becoming Christos in spirit. Unlike Jesus Chrestos, Paul revoked openly the Jewish law of circumcision. For Paul, Christ was not a person but an embodied ideal. Paul was a Nazar, a Chaldean Theurgist. He was a Master-Builder, an Adept in a Kabbalistic, Theurgic, and Masonic sense. That is why he was so persecuted and hated by Peter, John, and James. Whoever else might have built the Church of Rome it was not the Apostle of the Circumcision. The assertion that hen-hearted Peter suffered martyrdom at Rome is the greatest of all Patristic frauds. Scared at the accusation of the servant of the high priest, the apostle had thrice denied his master. The extraordinary forgeries of the Fathers have been plainly demonstrated by diligent research and the power of informed logic. Did you know that the first fifteen Christian bishops of Jerusalem, commencing with James and including Judas, were all circumcised Jews? Who was the Peter who invented a burning hell and threatened every one with it? Who promised miracles, but worked none? The controversy sparked by the death of Jesus, between the Petrine and the Pauline sects, was deplorable. What one did, the other vowed to undo. His “chair” was not apostolical either: it had been plagiarised from old initiatory rites. There were two chairs of the titular apostle at Rome. But the chair holder was conspicuous by his absence. Why? Because the real “Chair of Peter,” was sacred rather than apostolical: the “Fathers” had plagiarised a chair occupied by the Hierophant during initiations, when showing to the candidate the last revelation set in two tablets of stone. That was how Popes appointed themselves successors to the title of Peter. The Roman Church has attempted to connect the leader of the Apostles with the initiatory stone tablets or Petroma, and appointing him vicar of Christ on earth and first Pope. Thus, Popes have gained the right to call themselves successors to the title of Peter, but hardly successors to the doctrines of Jesus. While the old Aramaic Patar or Peter would connect master and disciple with the Secret Doctrine, any connection of the “Seat of Peter” with Petroma at the Supreme Initiation is far-fetched. Paul is the real founder of Christianity. Peter never had anything to do with the foundation of the Latin Church. Peter the Apostle and Petroma are miles apart. The former, represents matter and spiritual darkness; the latter, the Spirit of Christos within the heart of everyman. Peter never lost an occasion to contradict Paul without naming him, but indicating him so clearly that it was next to impossible to doubt whom he meant. Peter and Paul epitomise the two Opposing Forces of the Universe. It is doubtful whether either of these men were historical figures. This awful and ugly state of Christianity has been cunningly preserved from too close scrutiny by an array of formidable Church penances and anathemas, which kept the curious back under the false pretence of sacrilege and profanation of “divine mysteries”; millions have been butchered in the name of the God of Mercy. Paul had been converted, not to the Jesus of Nazareth, but to the Christos of the Gnostics. In his Epistles, he has been made to fulminate against the heretics but these heretics were actually Peter, James, and the other Apostles. The Christos of Paul is the same Christos who directs our occult movement. One who believes in Paul cannot believe in James, Peter, and John. For, what Paul preached, was preached by every other mystic philosopher. The author of the fourth evangel was not John, the friend and companion of Peter, whom he contradicts point-blank in chapter i, verse 18. Even the Romish monastery and nunnery are servile copies of similar religious houses in Thibet and Mongolia. One legacy of the Roman Church and seed of its own demise was the fabrication of an anthropomorphic god. Another, was the passports to heaven bearing an image of Peter holding the keys to paradise!

Synopsis Magic or Theurgy: Purpose and Pitfalls by : Plato, Proclus, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky

Mastery of the universal magnetic sympathy that exists between men, animals, plants, and minerals, selects and directs powers by sympathy; and expels unwanted ones by antipathy. As love of physical beauty grows to an appreciation of divine beauty, so the old priests, realising the mutual alliance and sympathy that underpins all kingdoms of life, and investigating the kinship between the manifested world and the occult powers that govern it, they fathomed out the relationship between Concealed Potentiality and Infinite Potencies at every level. Inspired by the presence of a Divine Virtue within, the lower classes sing the praises of the pinnacle of their respective order; some intellectually, others rationally; some in a natural manner, others physically. Every order of being proceeds gradually, in a beautiful descent, from the highest to the lowest. Stones and plants honour the sun and, in turn, they receive the bounty of divine love according to their ruling divinities. Magic is based on the affinities between organic and inorganic bodies, the visible productions of the four kingdoms, and the invisible powers of the universe. Thus, inferior ranks of the same order invariably venerate their superiors. That is why the cock is very much feared and revered by the lion. Insights to phenomena allowed the old priests to understand the power of noumena, and to control the hidden forces of nature. By combining various odours into one, they demonstrated the unity of Divine Essence. For, while division weakens each part, unity restores the idea of their exemplar. A humble herb or a self-unconscious stone is often enough to bring into being divine works. The master key of Divine Magic or Practical Theurgy is the Neo-Platonic term Theophania, when the Over-Soul (Atma-Buddhi) of a virtuous man incarnates for purposes of revelation. Then, the Word is made flesh in actuality, not as a figure of speech. A temporary divine incarnation is termed trance; if life-long, samadhi, when the mystic may at times quit his body. Personal god versus Absoluteness is the most troublesome of all doctrines. Once the self-delusion of anthropomorphism is understood and overcome, every mortal will realise that he is but a reflection of his immortal counterpart. The sole aim of Practical Occultism or Theurgy is the conscious reunion of the part with the All. Many are those who are eager to study Occultism, but very few have even an approximate idea of the Science itself. What Simon termed Magic, we now call Theosophia, i.e., Divine Wisdom, Power, and Knowledge. Its source and basis lies in the holy union of Spirit and Thought (Nous and Epinoia), whether on the purely divine or the terrestrial plane. That union is Helena, the “marriage” of Atma-Buddhi (Nous) with Lower Manas (male-female, in this sphere only), through which Spirit and Thought become one here on earth and are endowed with divine faculties and powers. Theoretical Occultism is harmless but Practical Magic is perilous. The numerals of the Kabbalah are especially dangerous. Unity, physical and metaphysical, is the real basis of Occult Sciences. While the Aryans applied their Science of Correspondences to veil the most spiritual and sublime truths of nature, the Jews used their acumen to conceal the single most divine mystery of evolution, i.e., that of birth and generation, before deifying the generative organs. Only Pythagoras’ cosmological theory of numerals can reconcile Matter and Spirit, and cause each to demonstrate the truth about the other mathematically. Let us then allow the world cling to its gods, to whatever plane or realm they may belong. The true Occultist would be guilty of high treason to mankind, were he to break forever the old deities before he could replace them with the whole and unadulterated truth. And this he cannot do as yet. The Esotericism of Egypt was that of the whole world during the long ages of the Third Race for it was imparted by Divine Instructors, the primeval Seven “Sons of Light.”

Synopsis Morality is man’s pristine effort to harmonise with Universal Law by : Mohini Mohun Chatterji

You cannot be one with All, unless all your acts, thoughts, and feelings synchronise with the onward march of Nature. The principal obstacle to the realization of this Oneness is the inborn habit of man of always placing himself at the centre of the Universe.

Synopsis Proclus on Socrates' Daemon by : Thomas Taylor

Daemons and heroes connect Divinity with man. Daemons are close to the divine nature; heroes to men. By its powerful light, Divinity also possesses whatever daemons possess peculiar to inferior beings. Heroes possess unity, identity, permanency, and virtue, only when under the condition of plurality, motion, and mixture. There are three orders of daemons. Middle order daemons preside over mankind, and the ascents and descents of souls. Daemons are much higher entities than the rational soul. They energise the soul and preside over us till we are brought before the judges of our conduct. While intellect is the governor of the soul, daemon is the inspector and guardian of mankind. He governs the whole of our life. He gives perfection to reason, measures the passions, inspires nature, connects the body, supplies things fortuitous, accomplishes the decrees of fate, and imparts the gifts of providence. In short, our daemon is the king of everything in and about us, and the pilot of the whole of our life. Hence Socrates was most perfect, being governed by such a presiding power, and conducting himself by the will of such a great leader and guardian of his life. The daemon within Socrates did not act upon Socrates externally with passivity; but the daemoniacal inspiration proceeding inwardly through his whole soul, and diffusing itself as far as to the organs of sense, became at last a voice, which was recognized more by consciousness, than by sense. The voice never exhorted, but perpetually recalled Socrates. Motivated from his great readiness to benefit those with whom he conversed, he acted naturally from within without. He needed not promptings from his guardian and benefactor. The voice of his daemon kept recalling Socrates’ consciousness inwardly in order to constrain his association with the multitude and the vulgar, so that his purity remained untainted.
