In 1986-87 boatbuilder Barry Thomas and his crew at Mystic Seaport constructed a 20-foot catboat after rediscovering the methods used in the famous Crosby boatshops on Cape Cod, ca. 1880-1935. In this construction guide the author documents the unique Crosby building methods and discusses the importance of preserving and using appropriate technologies from the past.

This cultural and historical study of the coast draws from a variety of sources to illuminate both the landscape of the shore and its place in American life. The work scrutinizes the fishing boats, lighthouses, wharfs, resorts, shipwrecks and people, to evoke the culture of the coast.

Greg Rossel grew up cruising the waters of New York Harbor and spending time in the boatyards on the south shore of Staten Island where economics (more than anything else) made wooden boats the craft of choice. He makes his home in Maine where he specializes in the construction and repair of small wooden boats, as well as writing for several publications. Greg has been an instructor at WoodenBoat School in Maine since the mid-1980's, teaching lofting, skiff building, and the "Fundamentals of Boatbuilding".

In the winter of 1993 Conway and his family purchased the 24-foot Buckrammer, an almost 100-year-old leak- and rust-plugged wooden boat. They then set about restoring the old bucket into the family yacht. Catboat Summers chronicles a decade's worth of adventures in New England waters.

This volume presents multiple idiographic, archaeological studies of vernacular watercraft from North America and the Caribbean. Rather than attempt to synthesize all vernacular types, this volume focuses on ship construction data recovered through archaeological investigations that has been used to make inferences about culture. This collection of case studies, including many examples from cultural resource management and graduate student theses, presents a thematic exploration of cultural adaptation as expressed through ship construction.

In the 1940s through the 1960s, the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce promoted Cape Cod as "an alluring vacationland where the blue begins, and the frets of life cease." At the same time, a young, exuberant man with a camera, Richard Cooper Kelsey, arrived in Chatham. Kelsey began compiling a photographic record of small town life, of Cape Cod tourist landmarks, and the real people of Cape Cod with precision and clarity. He portrayed a Cape Cod of much beauty and charm, an earlier, more youthful time, and a time just within reach of memory. The photographs in The Forgotten Cape: 1940-1960 were culled from the over7,000item Kelsey Collection of the Nickerson Room at Wilkens Library, Cape Cod Community College.
