Challenged by the teaching of Vatican II about the "seeds of the Word" in non-Christian religions, this book investigates the sacred character of the Saddharmapuṇḍarika Sūtra and its relation to the fundamental theological category of scriptural inspiration. In applying the methods of modern exegesis, the Sūtra in its ingenious composition is disclosed as a religious drama about the inspirational experience of the Buddha. The draft of a theology of inspiration along the guide lines of the Dogmatic Constitution Dei Verbum of Vatican II elaborates a 'christology of the Word' as its core, which allows an extension of inspiration in analogical manner to non-Biblical scriptures. The contrast of Christ, the "Word incarnate", and Buddha, the "Inspired One", offers a new contribution to an inter- religious dialogue.

The present work represents a rather unique approach to Vedic Studies, in as much as it puts forward an hypothesis rarely expressed by Vedists, namely, that the Vedic Religion is less connected with poets and priests belonging to patriarchal clans of herdsman than with magico-religious circles of dissident warrior groups.

The recent tide of books comparing Christianity and Buddhism has centered mostly on similarities. The Dalai Lama, for example, provided his opinions on Christianity in a popular book, The Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus (1996). Other writers have equally sought to describe these two traditions as “two paths to the same place.” Finding these approaches overly simplified, Anthony Clark confronts the distinctions between Buddhism and Catholic Christianity, acknowledging areas of confluence, but also discerning areas of abiding difference. Clark provides here a Catholic view of Buddhism that avoids obfuscations, seeking clarity for the sake of more productive dialogue.

Buddhist Kaleidoscope brings together essays on the Lotus Sutra by an international assembly of Buddhist scholars, taking into account historic and modern reflections on the Lotus Sutra. Discussions in the book range from "The Lotus Sutra and the Dimension of Time" to "The Lotus Sutra and Health Care Ethics." One essay considers the Lotus Sutra in relation to social obligations, while others regard feminist and paternalist readings. In his introduction, editor Gene Reeves says he tried to include the broadest possible diversity of views, offering a complete vision of this important Buddhist scripture.
