Synopsis Broadsheets by : Andrew Pettegree

This volume offers an expansive survey of the role of single-sheet publishing in the European print industry during the first two centuries after the invention of printing. Drawing on new materials made available during the compilation of the Universal Short Title Catalogue, the twenty contributors explore the extraordinary range of broadsheet publishing and its contribution to government, pedagogy, religious devotion and entertainment culture. Long disregarded as ephemera or cheap print, broadsheets emerge both as a crucial communication medium and an essential underpinning of the economics of the publishing industry.

Synopsis Audience Orientation in News Stories by : Elisabeth Fritz

Seminar paper from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, University of Augsburg (Lehrstuhl für Englische Sprachwissenschaft), language: English, abstract: Every day new things happen. With modern technology, news can be distributed all over the world and faster than ever before. Additionally, the distribution of (and access to) news has become much cheaper. Consequently, the number of sources we can get information from has increased drastically throughout the last decades, as has the amount of information. In our modern information society, the mass media have come to play a decisive role. At the same time, it becomes more and more difficult to judge the reliability of the news. One of the oldest forms of mass media, which is still generally regarded as trustworthy, is the newspaper. When it comes to newspapers, people usually prefer one (or two) specific news¬papers to others. Every newspaper has its own specific image which includes some characteristics that it is generally known for. If all newspapers provided all the news there is and reported it in an objective manner, this would not make much sense. Indeed, with the amount of potential "news" emerging every day and the restrictions of the medium, it is impossible to cover everything - the newspapers must choose what to include in their coverage and what not to. Similarly, it is an illusion to expect news to be reported completely objectively. One reason for this is that the medium language inherently conveys connotations and values, which makes a purely objective coverage simply impossible. But apart from this restriction, it is a well-known fact that newspapers all have their particular perspective from which they contemplate and present news. However, this is not solely the newspapers' choice. Since they are financially dependent on their readers who buy their issues, they have to do their best in order to meet their readerships' interests. Consideri

Synopsis Posada's Broadsheets by : Patrick Frank

Jose Guadalupe Posada is one of the most important graphic artists of modern Mexico. This book offers a close examination of his extensive broadsheet work in its original context: the murders, disasters, revolts, and popular heroes that engaged the attention of the public in Mexico City in the declining years of Porfirio Diaz's dictatorship. Patrick Frank analyzes the sources of Posada's style in Mexican and European prints and cartoons and shows how he altered them to fill his illustrations with vigor and life. Frank shows that Posada's outlook was that of the working class and that he depicted the stories of his day from a vantage point belonging neither to the defenders of the regime nor to its organized opposition. This book brings fresh insights to the work of a major figure in Mexican art history.

Synopsis Constructing the Higher Education Student by : Brooks, Rachel

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. Amid debates about the future of both higher education and Europeanisation, this book is the first full-length exploration of how Europe’s 35 million students are understood by key social actors across different nations. The various chapters compare and contrast conceptualisations in six nations, held by policymakers, higher education staff, media and students themselves. With an emphasis on students’ lived experiences, the authors provide new perspectives about how students are understood, and the extent to which European higher education is homogenising. They explore various prominent constructions of students – including as citizens, enthusiastic learners, future workers and objects of criticism.

Synopsis Death, Sex & Money by : Michael Young

What was it like being at the news desk on the evening of September 11 2001? Or when the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated on re-entry in February 2003? Or when the tsunami hit on Boxing Day 2004? Death, Sex and Money is an open window into the frenetic world of journalism, and how editors fill the pages of a newspaper every day. Veteran journalist Michael Young takes readers behind the masthead to reveal the players involved in writing, editing and producing the modern newspaper. Experience life at a chaotic news desk, and see first-hand how news is collected and the big stories covered. What emerges is the changing definition of news, and how newspapers have had to adapt to the twenty-first century in the ever-present shadow of the internet, blogs and citizen journalism, shrinking formats and falling circulation.
