Synopsis Geometry: Euclid and Beyond by : Robin Hartshorne
This book offers a unique opportunity to understand the essence of one of the great thinkers of western civilization. A guided reading of Euclid's Elements leads to a critical discussion and rigorous modern treatment of Euclid's geometry and its more recent descendants, with complete proofs. Topics include the introduction of coordinates, the theory of area, history of the parallel postulate, the various non-Euclidean geometries, and the regular and semi-regular polyhedra.

Synopsis Geometry and Topology of Manifolds: Surfaces and Beyond by : Vicente Muñoz
This book represents a novel approach to differential topology. Its main focus is to give a comprehensive introduction to the classification of manifolds, with special attention paid to the case of surfaces, for which the book provides a complete classification from many points of view: topological, smooth, constant curvature, complex, and conformal. Each chapter briefly revisits basic results usually known to graduate students from an alternative perspective, focusing on surfaces. We provide full proofs of some remarkable results that sometimes are missed in basic courses (e.g., the construction of triangulations on surfaces, the classification of surfaces, the Gauss-Bonnet theorem, the degree-genus formula for complex plane curves, the existence of constant curvature metrics on conformal surfaces), and we give hints to questions about higher dimensional manifolds. Many examples and remarks are scattered through the book. Each chapter ends with an exhaustive collection of problems and a list of topics for further study. The book is primarily addressed to graduate students who did take standard introductory courses on algebraic topology, differential and Riemannian geometry, or algebraic geometry, but have not seen their deep interconnections, which permeate a modern approach to geometry and topology of manifolds.

Synopsis Beyond Geometry by : John Tabak
The History of Mathematics is a six-volume set that examines the development of the science through discovery, innovation, collaboration, and experimentation. Designed to complement mathematics curricula, each volume covers a significant development in recent mathematical history as well as the subject's origins. The books represent a fascinating overview of the contributions that mathematical research has made to the physical world. Beyond Geometry examines topology, a major branch of mathematics concerned with the presentation of spatial properties under continuous deformations, such as stretching, from its inception in the early 19th century to today. Throughout history, Euclidean geometry was the accepted language of mathematics, but as mathematicians began to see its limitations, new theorems were tested that evolved into this new branch of mathematics. The book gives a straightforward overview of the rapid advancement of topology and explains such subsets of set-theoretic topology as dimension theory. It also includes an exclusive interview with Dr. Scott Williams, a distinguished professor of mathematics at the University of Buffalo, who discusses the contributions and goals of this innovative field of mathematics. The volume includes information on dimension history of topology the Hausdorff dimension limitations of geometry the Moore method set theory the standard axioms topological spaces The book contains 30 color photographs and four-color line illustrations, sidebars, a chronology, a glossary, a detailed list of print and Internet resources, and an index. The History of Mathematics is essential for high school students, teachers, and general readers who wish to understand the contributions of the major branches of mathematics. Book jacket.

Synopsis Complex Geometry by : Ian Reid
Photographer and documentarian Ian Reid was born and raised in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. In 2018 he set out to photograph 23 public housing developments in Brooklyn from above. His goal was to preserve the architecture and to present the structures without any preconceived notions of what goes on within. The images are framed by the streets they are defined by, often showing how they look with the changing seasons. Gentrification and development have changed the surroundings of the public housing, but the buildings and its residents for the most part stay the same. Complex Geometry respects the true residents of Brooklyn and pays homage to where Reid grew up and still spends a great deal of his time.

Synopsis Putnam and Beyond by : Răzvan Gelca
This book takes the reader on a journey through the world of college mathematics, focusing on some of the most important concepts and results in the theories of polynomials, linear algebra, real analysis, differential equations, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, elementary number theory, combinatorics, and probability. Preliminary material provides an overview of common methods of proof: argument by contradiction, mathematical induction, pigeonhole principle, ordered sets, and invariants. Each chapter systematically presents a single subject within which problems are clustered in each section according to the specific topic. The exposition is driven by nearly 1300 problems and examples chosen from numerous sources from around the world; many original contributions come from the authors. The source, author, and historical background are cited whenever possible. Complete solutions to all problems are given at the end of the book. This second edition includes new sections on quad ratic polynomials, curves in the plane, quadratic fields, combinatorics of numbers, and graph theory, and added problems or theoretical expansion of sections on polynomials, matrices, abstract algebra, limits of sequences and functions, derivatives and their applications, Stokes' theorem, analytical geometry, combinatorial geometry, and counting strategies. Using the W.L. Putnam Mathematical Competition for undergraduates as an inspiring symbol to build an appropriate math background for graduate studies in pure or applied mathematics, the reader is eased into transitioning from problem-solving at the high school level to the university and beyond, that is, to mathematical research. This work may be used as a study guide for the Putnam exam, as a text for many different problem-solving courses, and as a source of problems for standard courses in undergraduate mathematics. Putnam and Beyond is organized for independent study by undergraduate and gradu ate students, as well as teachers and researchers in the physical sciences who wish to expand their mathematical horizons.

Synopsis Clifford Algebras And Zeons: Geometry To Combinatorics And Beyond by : George Stacey Staples
Clifford algebras have many well-known applications in physics, engineering, and computer graphics. Zeon algebras are subalgebras of Clifford algebras whose combinatorial properties lend them to graph-theoretic applications such as enumerating minimal cost paths in dynamic networks. This book provides a foundational working knowledge of zeon algebras, their properties, and their potential applications in an increasingly technological world. As a graduate-level or advanced undergraduate-level mathematics textbook, it is suitable for self-study by researchers interested in new approaches to existing combinatorial problems and applications (wireless networks, Boolean satisfiability, coding theory, etc.).As the first textbook to explore algebraic and combinatorial properties of zeon algebras in depth, it is suitable for interdisciplinary study in analysis, algebra, and combinatorics. The material is complemented by the CliffMath software package for Mathematica, which is freely available through the book's webpage.

Synopsis Indus Seals (2600-1900 Bce) Beyond Geometry by : Parveen Talpur
"Indus Seals (2600-1900 BCE) Beyond Geometry: A New Approach to Break an Old Code" is a pioneering work which draws attention to the languages and culture of the Indus region for a better understanding of its ancient Indus seals. The signs and symbols inscribed on the seals are considered to be an ancient script which is yet to be deciphered. However, the seals are also imbued with images of animals, humans, deities, trees and unidentifiable objects. Hence, apart from depicting the script they also symbolize an assortment of social, cultural and ideological content which requires a holistic approach for its interpretation. This book looks for clues in three latent sources to establish the socio-cultural context of the seal images: it seeks ancient words retained in the Sindhi language and relates them to the seal images; it highlights the symbols of Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism on the seals and traces the roots of the philosophy of nonviolence in ancient Indus cities; and it examines the geometric principles and patterns of seals to study the significance of geometry in the Indus Civilization. The book, through a few examples, demonstrates that these seemingly diverse means can eventually converge to present a clearer picture of a small fraction of the seal iconography. Hence, the book also emphasizes to explore more sources to understand the multiple facets of the seals."Indus Seals (2600-1900 BCE) Beyond Geometry: A New Approach to Break an Old Code" is Talpur's third book on the Indus Civilization. It is a companion to her last book "Moen jo Daro: Metropolis of the Indus Civilization (2600-1900 BCE)" and it is an update to her previous research covered in "Evidence of Geometry in Indus Valley Civilization," her first book on this subject.
