This bilingual anthology brings together a collection of Spanish entremeses, the comic interludes that were performed between the acts of a comedia. Penned by authors such as Lope de Rueda, Cervantes, Calderón, Quevedo, and Quiñones de Benavente, many of these plays appear here for the first time in English. Translated for performability, these plays create a panoramic view of one-act plays from Spain’s classical theater period. Presented with discussions of dramaturgical and performance possibilities and difficulties, including relevant historical, cultural, and social information for the plays, the collection opens with two precursors to the entremés, moves through the breadth of the entremés form, and concludes with works from the 18th century, including a sainete. There are also examples of trans-adaptation that show how these works can be interpreted through strong directorial concepts that relocate the plays in historical time and location. The selected titles raise challenges to social mores and expectations, surprise with their humor, and delight with their stagecraft. Whether aimed at the classroom or the stage, the collection is valuable for research, pedagogy, and performance.

En esta narración puse todo mi empeño en contar las fantasías y costumbres de la población, y con muchas verdades que vislumbra en los estratos más sensibles de la localidad. La historia del maléfico y terrible: "Pombero", que es un verdadero espíritu, aunque a veces se presenta como fantasía. Como verán lo que sucedió a una joven de 14 año de edad, de la que se puede palpar minuciosamente lo sucedido a ella, y además con un niño recién nacido de madre desconocida, que lleva como único nombre conocido, como "El Huerfanito" en un populoso y nutrido pueblo llamado "San Jaimito de la Misión". El Huerfanito es una de las tanta historia verdadera que con mucho dolor llegó a ser parte de una historia del abuso familiar y social del lugar, y como novela dramática se presenta para el relato los ingredientes literarios, además ni corta ni extensa se presenta, en la que volcado todo mi entusiasmo de lo palpado y visto. Para caracterizar una serie de personajes, que a veces parecen escapados del paraíso, y otras veces del mismo infierno, aunque siempre tienen algo que decir y enseñar desde el principio hasta el fin lo mucho que sucedió en ese lugar. Además están escritas con la intención real de provocar el suspenso y mantener la atención del lector en todo el desarrollo de la trama, que es a la vez fascinante y evocadora, para llevar un buen recuerdo del contenido literario.

La Condesa "Historia y Leyenda" es una novela donde se narra de una manera ficticia la vida de María Magdalena Catalina Dávalos de Bracamontes y Orozco, quien fuera la Tercera Condesa de Miravalle. Ambientada en el siglo XVIII en la Nueva España, en una época donde la religión era juez y verdugo de las conductas de los hombres y mujeres. La historia narrada en las líneas de este libro, invita al lector a transportarse en imaginación hasta aquellos tiempos y lugares, donde los hechos reales y ficticios se hacen uno mismo. La Condesa, una mujer poderosa que abusó de su belleza y de su título nobiliario para conseguir lo que se proponía, sin importarle sacrificar a su moral ni a sus buenos principios. Odiada por muchos y amada por muy pocos, que desafió a las costumbres de su época, llevándola incluso a enfrentarse con las autoridades eclesiásticas, situación que le trajo la desgracia y la tragedia. Mujer altiva y orgullosa, que era poseedora de muy buenos, y también de muy malos sentimientos. Víctima primero, victimaria después, esta la historia de una mujer que amó y fue amada, y que dejó una huella imborrable en los lugares que habitó. These new translations of Bernat Metge’s Libre de Fortuna e Prudència (1381) into Spanish (verse) and English (prose) make this key early work by 14th-century Catalonia’s most challenging writer available to the wider audience it has longed deserved. As with Metge’s masterwork, Lo somni (The Dream), recently translated by Cortijo Ocaña and Elisabeth Lagresa (Benjamins, 2013), the writing of The Book of Fortune and Prudence seems to have been precipitated by a larger crisis in Catalan society, in this case, an all-too-familiar-sounding banking crisis. Drawing on sources ranging from Boethius, to the Roman de la Rose to Arthurian fable, Metge unveils the workings of the world through his two allegorical women, Fortune (good and bad) and Prudence, in a search for consolation in the midst of inexplicable reversals of fortune--those of others, and perhaps his own. But as in the Somni, Metge refuses here to offer pat solutions to the crises of his day, offering what is perhaps one of our earliest glimpses of the impact of new ideas coming from Italy in the Iberian Peninsula. The work is written in the popular noves rimades form (octosyllabic rhymed couplets) in the challenging mix of Occitan and Catalan common to verse writing in 14th century Catalonia. Cortijo’s and Martines’s tri-lingual edition, together with its fine introduction and notes, is an extremely valuable contribution as it makes this unduly neglected text of the later Iberian Middle Ages available for students and other readers in a broadly accessible, yet scholarly, form.
