Synopsis ALA Glossary of Library and Information Science, Fourth Edition by : Michael Levine-Clark

The only things librarians seem to encounter more often than acronyms are strings of jargon and arcane technical phrases—and there are so many floating around that even just reading an article in a professional journal can bewilder experienced librarians, to say nothing of those new to the profession! Featuring thousands of revised and brand new entries, the fourth edition of ALA Glossary of Library and Information Science presents a thorough yet concise guide to the specific words that describe the materials, processes and systems relevant to the field of librarianship. A panel of experts from across the LIS world have thoroughly updated the glossary to include the latest technology- and internet-related terms, covering metadata, licensing, electronic resources, instruction, assessment, readers’ advisory, and electronic workflow. This book will become an essential part of every library’s and librarian’s reference collection and will also be a blessing for LIS students and recent graduates.

Synopsis Libraries and Information Centres in Hong Kong by : Julia L.Y. Chan

The directory records information on 763 libraries in Hong Kong, listing 53 community centre libraries, 62 general and public libraries, 27 post-secondary college and university libraries, 16 theological libraries, 432 school libraries, 50 government departmental libraries, 24 hospital/medical/nursing libraries, 95 special libraries and 4 club/society libraries. In October 1994, questionnaires were sent or faxed to every library listed in the previous edition and various other sources. For those libraries who had contributed to the previous edition (1988) a copy of their previous entries was supplied for amendment and addition; to prospective new entrants sample entries were sent for general guidance. Information in the directory has been compiled from the returned questionnaires or direct telephone contacts with those who did not respond to the initial questionnaires. The final deadline for collection of data was September 1995. Approximately 750 questionnaires were sent out. More than 98% responded, many with enthusiasm for the project. The response to the questionnaires is gratifying, which indicates that the directory has achieved a high level of respect among libraries and information services in Hong Kong. The main body of the directory consists of a single alphabetic sequence of entries for the various institutions, with a classified section at the end. Each entry contains detailed information such as the address, person in charge, opening hours, services provided, funds available, stock, loan and reader statistics, catalogue type, and extension activities organized. The directory serves as a major resource for librarians and information specialists and is a necessary purchase of any library and information centre.

Synopsis Managing and Adapting Library Information Services for Future Users by : Osuigwe, Nkem Ekene

Information in today’s modernized world has become much more attainable with the use of technology. A resource that has fallen victim to this are library services. What was once a staple of knowledge and communication has failed to keep pace with recent advancements in information service providers. Library practitioners need to learn how to manage change, build influence, and adapt their services to remain relevant within local communities. Libraries can continue to play a key role in future aspects of information provision, but proper research is a necessity. Managing and Adapting Library Information Services for Future Users is a collection of innovative research that encapsulates practices, concepts, ideas, and proposals that would chart pathways for libraries of all types to envision and understand how to thrive and remain relevant in the competitive information provision environment. It is expected to motivate librarians and information scientists to probe further into how libraries would better serve user communities of the 21st century who have options of accessing information from sources other than from libraries. While highlighting topics including artificial intelligence, human design thinking, and alternative finance, this book is ideally designed for librarians, information specialists, architects, data scientists, researchers, community development practitioners, policymakers, faculty members, and students seeking current research on emerging advancements in library optimization.

Synopsis Managing Technologies and Automated Library Systems in Developing Countries: Open Source vs Commercial Options by : Bernard Dione

The theme of this meeting was the management of technologies in the context of developing countries, and in the light of recent developments concerning especially open source software and applications. Speakers from various countries debated in English and in French over the importance of changing the rules concerning library management systems, as well as related implications. Results show that open source software might be a solution, although some conditions apply.
