Synopsis Assessing the Nursing and Care Needs of Older Adults by : Helen Taylor
Health resources are becoming increasingly constrained. So it is essential that professionals, and the public, recognise the need to work together in establishing local priorities and collaborate in their implementation. Priority Setting and The Public challenges many widely accepted beliefs and perceptions. It links together academic literature, critical overviews of methods and approaches with practical applications and original research. It shows the different approaches to engaging the public, challenges and how progress can be achieved. A wide number of methods, from a range of disciplines are described, reviewed and guidance is given on factors to consider for selection. This book is essential reading for all health service and primary care organisations, especially those responsible for resource allocation, clinical governance and public health.

Synopsis Fragility Fracture Nursing by : Karen Hertz
This open access book aims to provide a comprehensive but practical overview of the knowledge required for the assessment and management of the older adult with or at risk of fragility fracture. It considers this from the perspectives of all of the settings in which this group of patients receive nursing care. Globally, a fragility fracture is estimated to occur every 3 seconds. This amounts to 25 000 fractures per day or 9 million per year. The financial costs are reported to be: 32 billion EUR per year in Europe and 20 billon USD in the United States. As the population of China ages, the cost of hip fracture care there is likely to reach 1.25 billion USD by 2020 and 265 billion by 2050 (International Osteoporosis Foundation 2016). Consequently, the need for nursing for patients with fragility fracture across the world is immense. Fragility fracture is one of the foremost challenges for health care providers, and the impact of each one of those expected 9 million hip fractures is significant pain, disability, reduced quality of life, loss of independence and decreased life expectancy. There is a need for coordinated, multi-disciplinary models of care for secondary fracture prevention based on the increasing evidence that such models make a difference. There is also a need to promote and facilitate high quality, evidence-based effective care to those who suffer a fragility fracture with a focus on the best outcomes for recovery, rehabilitation and secondary prevention of further fracture. The care community has to understand better the experience of fragility fracture from the perspective of the patient so that direct improvements in care can be based on the perspectives of the users. This book supports these needs by providing a comprehensive approach to nursing practice in fragility fracture care.

Each unit begins with an overview and a chapter on normal ageing to provide the basis for understanding the pathological parameters for each diagnosis Common problems are presented in each chapter in a consistent format Case studies of common problems are integrated throughout to illustrate the assessment data and diagnostic and treatment reasoning

Interprofessional Collaboration (IPC) material, which is found in boxes or is highlighted with orange bars in the margins, indicates the responsibilities of nurses to collaborate with other professionals and paraprofessionals in health care and community-based settings when caring for older adults. NEW! Global Perspective boxes provide examples of the various ways in which health care professionals in other countries provide care for older adults. NEW! Unfolding Patient Stories, written by the National League for Nursing, are an engaging way to begin meaningful conversations in the classroom. These vignettes, which open each unit, feature patients from Wolters Kluwer’s vSim for Nursing | Gerontology (co-developed with Laerdal Medical) and DocuCare products; however, each Unfolding Patient Story in the book stands alone, not requiring purchase of these products. Updated unfolding case studies illustrate common experiences of older adults as they progress from young-old to old-old and are affected by combinations of age-related changes and risk factors. Evidence-based information is threaded through the content and summarized in boxes in clinically oriented chapters. Assessment and intervention guidelines help nurses identify and address factors that affect the functioning and quality of life of older adults. Nursing interventions focus on teaching older adults and their caregivers about actions they can take to promote wellness. Case studies include content on transitional care, interprofessional collaboration, and QSEN!

Organized in user-friendly format, the book provides vital information on all aspects of hospital care and the full range of health issues encountered by elderly patients.
