The true pioneers in electronic publishing put their bibliographic databases on tape and online in the 1960s. Nearly all of them had long experience with compiling information for distribution in printed form and a strong market connection. As a result of Soviet advances in science and space technology, American government support for information science and academic libraries flowed freely for a little over a decade, making possible tremendous advances in technology, in retrieval techniques and in sophisticated coverage. Advances in information technology and market conditions have encouraged many more participants to underwrite the development of databases that now extend into the arts, social sciences, business, and popular interests. These essays show how production statistics accompanied by statements of editorial coverage provide a fairly accurate reflection of output of many of the major disciplinary bibliographic databases. The urgent priority of information resources in the 1960s has encouraged comprehensive servicing of the formal research literature as published in journals and monographs. Authors have counted subject words, languages, origins, types of publication, and so on over several decades. This volume also includes articles on some databases that are not strictly bibliographic, such as the CMG database of college courses, which illuminates some of the changes in college textbook publishing. Information seekers will find the many tables of practical use, as guidance to what and how much may be found within each database. Analysts of publishing, of science policy, and of higher education will find information relevant to expenditures, human resources, and other indicators of education, research, and technology activity.

This document contains the Report and papers presented at the Regional Workshop on Networking for Improved Access to Fisheries and Aquaculture Information in Africa, which was held in Grahamstown, South Africa, from 3 to 7 November 2003. Eighteen participants from Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Seychelles and South Africa attended the Workshop and presented papers. Fisheries library networking activities were reviewed as a basis for planning future collaboration to improve access to fisheries information and to promote information resources sharing. The summary of priority issues includes improved dissemination of African fisheries publications, full-text online fisheries journals, open source software, network focal points, the use of standard methodologies to enhance information exchange and technology for document delivery. The first edition of this book was published by Chapman and Hall Ltd. in 1996. The first edition contained nine chapters and, for all except one chapter, the original chapter authors agreed to update their chapter. Comparing these chapters gives the reader an idea of the development over a time span of more than 10 years between the two editions. In the preparation of the second edition we decided to add more chapters reflecting some important fields with significant contributions to present day fishery research. These are the use of internet for searching of information (Chapter 2), and the present state and use of remote sensing (Chapter 5), ecosystem modeling (Chapter 8) and visualization of data (Chapter 10). This second edition provides a valuable sampling of contemporary applications. Scientists have an opportunity to evaluate the suitability of different computer technology applications to their particular research situation thereby taking advantage of the experience of others. The chapters that follow are the fruition of this idea. The history behind this book started in 1989 when we were asked by Dr. Vidar Wespestad (previously: Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Seattle, USA) to prepare and convene a session at the 1992 World Fishery Congress in Athens, Greece on computer applications in fisheries. We agreed that the idea was a good one and the computer session in 1992 turned out to be very successful.

This document presents the report of the 2022 ASFA Advisory Board Meeting (ABM), which took place virtually from 12 to 14?September, with a final session on the ASFA business model taking place on 23 November. Though ASFA has been in a period of transition since the need for a new business model was identified in 2018, progress has been made in recent years in the areas of technologies, with the launch of OpenASFA and migration of the Subject Vocabulary to AGROVOC, and communications, with working groups now meeting regularly and the ASFA magazine published twice yearly. Despite these improvements, doubt remains as to ASFA’s future with a need to prove the usefulness of the information network in an age of rapidly changing technologies and demands from users for information to be free and quick to access. Discussions on these topics, as well as the financial situation, were held at the 2022 ABM with decisions taken that will help ASFA adopt a new business model. These decisions include approval of a revised partnership agreement, improvements to the ASFA regional networks and working groups as well as support for training, communications and promotional materials that will help ASFA to launch a recruitment drive in 2023 and to re-engage with currently inactive partners.
