This volume presents technical papers devoted to development and practical use of computer methods in geotechnical and geoenviromental engineering. It covers issues on space use and construction, soil and rock mechanics, and mining applications amongst other topics.

This text concentrates mainly on the Polish mining industry. It involves mining of a significant quantities of lignite, coal, copper, sulphur and many industrial minerals, which are all discussed in this book.

ICANN, the International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks, is the official conference series of the European Neural Network Society which started in Helsinki in 1991. Since then ICANN has taken place in Brighton, Amsterdam, Sorrento, Paris, Bochum and Lausanne, and has become Europe's major meeting in the field of neural networks. This book contains the proceedings of ICANN 98, held 2-4 September 1998 in Skovde, Sweden. Of 340 submissions to ICANN 98, 180 were accepted for publication and presentation at the conference. In addition, this book contains seven invited papers presented at the conference. A conference of this size is obviously not organized by three individuals alone. Developments in Geographic Information Technology have raised the expectations of users. A static map is no longer enough; there is now demand for a dynamic representation. Time is of great importance when operating on real world geographical phenomena, especially when these are dynamic. Researchers in the field of Temporal Geographical Information Systems (TGIS) have been developing methods of incorporating time into geographical information systems. Spatio-temporal analysis embodies spatial modelling, spatio-temporal modelling and spatial reasoning and data mining. Advances in Spatio-Temporal Analysis contributes to the field of spatio-temporal analysis, presenting innovative ideas and examples that reflect current progress and achievements.

Simulation is the fastest developing branch of geostatistics and simulating facies inside reservoirs and orebodies is the most exciting part of this. Several methods have been developed to do this (sequential indicator simulations, Boolean simulations, Markov chains and plurigaussian simulations). This book focuses on the last type of simulations. It presents the theory required to understand the method, along practical examples of applications in mining and the oil industry as well as tutorial exercises. Plurigaussian simulations are now the preferred method for simulating facies in both mining & the oil industry.
