DESTROYER, generally, according-to a well-known attribute of Apollo, exZpreffied in the symbolical writing of antient art by the bow and arrows which he carried. The tale which deduces it from ogni-dog', said to be the Cretan name for a moush, is of later times, and gives a signification unworthy of the solemnity of the occasion on which Chryses invokes the God, in his character of Destroyer, to avenge his wrongs upon the Greeks. Like.many others of the same kind, 'it was invented to give a fictitious meaning and paffive sense, which is oftener expressed by the active than the middle voice(x). The pronoun might also, in these instances, be understood, as in act: ye avwssavre; rarMov s; 'araNv (2). The Venetian Scholiast would, however, derive avnyaOe and evrevnvode from e9w, antiently FEOQ, whence the perfect FEFOOA, now written emOa According to his idea, therefore, the antient forms must have been ANFEFOOE and EHENFEFOOE, or with the aspirates elided, as in compounds, ANEFOOE and EUENEFOOE; but the perfect tense will not do in either instance. In 03. O. 365, the sense seems indeed to favour this etymology; but I think the line is spurious. AFQ, or AFEQ; whence come the antient words AFO-E-EFOE or-EOE, morning, and AFOFOZ the adjective derived from it_; both of which are now written and declined, after the Ionic and Attic manner, HQE-OTZ;, and HOIOZ The Ionic variation might have taken place even before the timeof Homer; but the Attic termination of the genitive is, as before observed, a corruption of no very earlyv date, it being unanthenticated by any very antient monument. An immense number of words are derived from this root, all of which were antiently written upon the same principle, as AFHP (in Ionic EFHP or HHP), ...

Synopsis Who Saved the Parthenon? by : William St Clair

In this magisterial book, William St Clair unfolds the history of the Parthenon throughout the modern era to the present day, with special emphasis on the period before, during, and after the Greek War of Independence of 1821–32. Focusing particularly on the question of who saved the Parthenon from destruction during this conflict, with the help of documents that shed a new light on this enduring question, he explores the contributions made by the Philhellenes, Ancient Athenians, Ottomans and the Great Powers. Marshalling a vast amount of primary evidence, much of it previously unexamined and published here for the first time, St Clair rigorously explores the multiple ways in which the Parthenon has served both as a cultural icon onto which meanings are projected and as a symbol of particular national, religious and racial identities, as well as how it illuminates larger questions about the uses of built heritage. This book has a companion volume with the classical Parthenon as its main focus, which offers new ways of recovering the monument and its meanings in ancient times. St Clair builds on the success of his classic text, The Reading Nation in the Romantic Period, to present this rich and authoritative account of the Parthenon’s presentation and reception throughout history. With weighty implications for the present life of the Parthenon, it is itself a monumental contribution to accounts of the Greek Revolution, to classical studies, and to intellectual history.

Synopsis The Emergence of Literary Criticism in 18th-Century Britain by : Sebastian Domsch

This study tries, through a systematic and historical analysis of the concept of critical authority, to write a history of literary criticism from the end of the 17th to the end of the 18th century that not only takes the discursive construction of its (self)representation into account, but also the social and economic conditions of its practice. It tries to consider the whole of the critical discourse on literature and criticism in the time period covered. Thus, it is distinctive through its methodology (there is no systematic account of the historical development of critical authority and no discussion of the institutionalization of criticism of such a scope), its material of analysis (most of the many hundred texts self-reflexively commenting on criticism that are discussed here have been so far virtually ignored) and through its results, a complex history of criticism in the 18th century that is neither reductive nor the accumulation of isolated aspects or author figures, but that probes into the very nature of the activity of criticism. The aim of this study is both to provide a thorough historical understanding of the emergence of criticism and as a consequence an understanding of the inner workings and power relations that structure criticism to this day.
