DESTROYER, generally, according-to a well-known attribute of Apollo, exZpreffied in the symbolical writing of antient art by the bow and arrows which he carried. The tale which deduces it from ogni-dog', said to be the Cretan name for a moush, is of later times, and gives a signification unworthy of the solemnity of the occasion on which Chryses invokes the God, in his character of Destroyer, to avenge his wrongs upon the Greeks. Like.many others of the same kind, 'it was invented to give a fictitious meaning and paffive sense, which is oftener expressed by the active than the middle voice(x). The pronoun might also, in these instances, be understood, as in act: ye avwssavre; rarMov s; 'araNv (2). The Venetian Scholiast would, however, derive avnyaOe and evrevnvode from e9w, antiently FEOQ, whence the perfect FEFOOA, now written emOa According to his idea, therefore, the antient forms must have been ANFEFOOE and EHENFEFOOE, or with the aspirates elided, as in compounds, ANEFOOE and EUENEFOOE; but the perfect tense will not do in either instance. In 03. O. 365, the sense seems indeed to favour this etymology; but I think the line is spurious.
