Synopsis Air Transport System by : Dieter Schmitt
The book addresses all major aspects to be considered for the design and operation of aircrafts within the entire transportation chain. It provides the basic information about the legal environment, which defines the basic requirements for aircraft design and aircraft operation. The interactions between airport, air traffic management and the airlines are described. The market forecast methods and the aircraft development process are explained to understand the very complex and risky business of an aircraft manufacturer. The principles of flight physics as basis for aircraft design are presented and linked to the operational and legal aspects of air transport including all environmental impacts. The book is written for graduate students as well as for engineers and experts, who are working in aerospace industry, at airports or in the domain of transport and logistics.

Synopsis The Sustainability of Air Transportation by : Milan Janic
This book presents, for the first time, a comprehensive analysis and assessment of the sustainability of the contemporary civil air transport system, examining its three main components: airports, air traffic control, and airlines. It offers an in-depth examination and quantitative insight into the system's current and prospective structure and operations, as well as the related effects and impacts. The sustainability of the air transport system is considered along a global trajectory of growing effects and diminishing and/or stagnating impacts on society and environment under conditions of continuous growth. In doing so, the author examines the situations of users of the system (passengers and freight shippers), air transport operators (airports, air traffic control and airlines), aerospace manufacturers, local and national communities, policymakers and the general public. The book possesses the unique and distinctive feature of providing an analysis and assessment of the air transport system's sustainability through elaboration of its technical/technological, operational, economic, social, environmental and institutional performances and their causality. It is written for advanced graduate and post-graduate students, researchers, planners, stakeholders, and policymakers dealing with the various sustainability issues of the contemporary air transport system.

Synopsis Energy Efficiency in Air Transportation by : Arturo Benito
Energy Efficiency in Air Transportation explores the relationship between air transportation and energy use, starting with an analysis of air transport energy sources and their potential development. The book examines how different elements of the air transport system make use of energy, with an analysis of various methods for optimizing energy consumption. The book covers the consequences of energy use in terms of economics, environmental impact and sustainable development, with a review of the existing and proposed regulatory measures addressing those factors. Aeronautical and air transport engineers interested in aerial vehicle systems design, as well as public administrators and regulators concerned with energy efficiency or environmental issues in air transport, will benefit greatly from this comprehensive reference, which captures necessary background information along with the newest developments in the field. - Examines new developments in energy efficiency in the air transport field - Includes exergy analyses of aerial vehicles and systems - Shows the environmental impact from fuel use including local air quality, consumption of non-renewable materials and contribution to climate change - Discusses the CO2 emissions certification required by ICAO for new aircraft models

Synopsis The Air Transportation Industry by : Rosario Macario
The aviation sector consists of various actors such as airlines, ground handling companies, and others all with conflicting priorities. In order to understand how these actors position themselves in an increasingly competitive market, The Air Transportation Industry: Economic Conflict and Competition analyzes all the market segments in detail, examining such issues as which industrial economic structure drives decisions, the main economic problems, the consequences for negotiations between different actors, impacts on the global aviation market, and much more. This book covers the entire aviation sector including strategies, regulation, resilience, privatization, airport slot management, and more. It examines how economic and strategic struggles underlie the current market structure, both for aviation as a whole and for the constituent actors as carriers, authorities, and handlers. It examines the ways market and nonmarket approaches impact the competitiveness of the air transport industry, offering a complete mapping of the economic actions between actors of the air transport industry. This volume will help readers gain insight into the possible strategic choices and the mutual competitive strength within the future aviation market. - Contains contributions from well-known aviation scholars - Includes numerous cases studies throughout that explore a wide range of topics - Focuses on applied knowledge, with clearly structured chapters examining topics from a global perspective - Addresses the ongoing consequences of COVID-19 on the air transportation industry, examining potential strategic responses in the event of subsequent pandemics

Synopsis Maintaining U.S. Leadership in Aeronautics by : National Research Council
After the completion of the National Research Council (NRC) report, Maintaining U.S. Leadership in Aeronautics: Scenario-Based Strategic Planning for NASA's Aeronautics Enterprise (1997), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Office of Aeronautics and Space Transportation Technology requested that the NRC remain involved in its strategic planning process by conducting a study to identify a short list of revolutionary or breakthrough technologies that could be critical to the 20 to 25 year future of aeronautics and space transportation. These technologies were to address the areas of need and opportunity identified in the above mentioned NRC report, which have been characterized by NASA's 10 goals (see Box ES-1) in "Aeronautics & Space Transportation Technology: Three Pillars for Success" (NASA, 1997). The present study would also examine the 10 goals to determine if they are likely to be achievable, either through evolutionary steps in technology or through the identification and application of breakthrough ideas, concepts, and technologies.
