Agroclimatology allows us to explore how different processes determine plant response to climate and how climate drives the distribution of crops and their productivity. Editors Jerry L. He taught at Columbia University and then at Indiana State where he was formerly Chair of the Geography-Geology Department, and Assoc iate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences. He has written many books and journal articles in Climatology, Applied Climatology and Physical Geography.

Agrometeorology is a comparatively young science. The beginnings of agrometeorological work came in the 20's of this century, when agrometeorology was a working branch of climatology. In the years following 1950 it then developed widely to an independent science. In this process, agrome teorology has not only gained a vast knowledge of the influence of meteorological conditions on plants and livestock in agriculture and damage prevention, but additionally evolved new advisory methods which are of great practical use in agriculture. Up to the present time there has been practically no specific training for an agrometeorologist. Agrometeoro logists are drawn, according to their training, from the ranks of general meteorology or from agriculture and its related biological disciplines. They must, therefore, them selves gather the knowledge for their agrometeorological work and combine for themselves the complex of agrome teorology from biological and meteorological information. This is usuaIIy far from easy, as the relevant literature is scattered among the most widely differing journals, partly in little-known foreign languages, and is thus very difficult of access. Comprehensive writings are to be found only in very few partial fields of agrometeorology. The subject of training problems has thus been treated as of utmost importance at the meetings ofthe Commission for Agrometeorology (CAgM) of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), especially as agrometeorology has won such great significance and useful ness not only in the so-called underdeveloped countries in advancing a more productive agriculture, but also in coun tries whose agricultural standard is already high.

This atlas is a study of climate and agroclimate in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic for the period 1990–2019 based on the downscaling of long-term observation data. It has been produced as part of the “Strengthening Agro-Climatic Monitoring and Information Systems (SAMIS) to improve adaptation to climate change and food security in Lao People’s Democratic Republic project. It aims to support the achievement of the Lao government’s priority targets, as set out in the country’s Ninth National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2021–2025). The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology (DMH) is the main body responsible for the national climate database and producing climate statistics. The Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALAM) also provided expertise in the use of advanced downscaling technologies. This Atlas presents the results of the work carried out by these bodies. The information describes in detail the country’s climate and how it has changed over the last 30 years.

'The Handbook of Horticulture' provides comprehensive subject-based reviews of horticulture in Tropical African regions generally and west of the sub-Saharan region in particular. A team of scientists and researchers from the University of Agriculture Faisalabad and University of Arid Agriculture Rawalpindi, in collaboration with FAO and Government of Punjab (Agriculture Department) worked together to delineate the Agro-Ecological Zoning (AEZ) in Punjab. AEZ refers to the division of Punjab region into land resource mapping units, having a unique combination of landform, soil and climatic characteristics, and/or land cover. Based on the most up to date collected information on natural resources, climate and agricultural markets, AEZ reveals an enormous potential for crop diversification and productivity. And it is the need of the hour in a country where population is rapidly growing and where climate changes (increases in temperature, changes in rainfall pattern, extreme weather events) evidence the vulnerability of the current agricultural systems. From a side AEZ will help to make smallholder farming a profitable business and overall enhance agriculture efficiency. On the other side, policymakers will be able to use data of AEZ and associated information on land characteristics (soil quality, topography, agricultural land use, yeld etc) to formulate optimal policies for sustainable agricultural production.
