Synopsis ACoRN: Acute Care of At-Risk Newborns by : Jill E. Boulton
The Acute Care of at-Risk Newborns (ACoRN) program trains health care providers to stabilize that most challenging and enigmatic of medical patients: the unwell newborn.Early assessment, intervention, and management of at-risk or unstable infants can be critical for their survival and long-term health. Clinical care standards and educational programs to address these requirements are needed. The ACoRN program provides a unique, prioritized, and systematic approachto newborn stabilization for health care professionals (HCPs) with any degree of experience. ACoRN-trained providers learn to gather information, prioritize, intervene appropriately, and deliver high quality care to at-risk and unwell newborns in any setting.Because research and practice have advanced dramatically in recent years, the need for a new ACoRN text, the program's centrepiece, became essential: hence the development of this new edition, which reflects current guidelines and evidence-based best practices.ACoRN teaches the concepts and skills required to stabilize unwell newborns through system-based algorithms ('Sequences'), each with its own chapter:- Respiratory- Neurology- Surgical Conditions- Cardiovascular- Fluid and Glucose- Jaundice- Thermoregulation- InfectionThe ACoRNS pneumonic defines stabilization steps and chapter structure: Alerting Signs, Core Steps, Organization of Care, Response, Next Steps, and Specific Diagnosis and Management. Each chapter includes educational objectives, key concepts, learning points, and at least one case scenario withquestions and answers to reinforce content and learnings. This book is written for any health professional who may be required to participate in the stabilization of sick or preterm babies within their scope of practice. The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) has worked to improve the health of children and youth since 1922. Backed by the expertise of more than 3,000 paediatricians, the CPS makes sure that parents and professionals have the best possible information about child and youth health and well-being. TheCPS is also involved in advocacy, research and education for health care providers.

Synopsis Oxford Textbook of the Newborn by : Michael Obladen
Well into the 20th century, one in four newborns failed to survive their first year of life. It was after World War II that medicine "discovered" the newborn as a human being entitled to medical treatment and prioritised care. Since its definition by Alexander Schaffer in 1960, neonatology has evolved into a mature, innovative, and ethical field. A large number of medical professionals' care for neonates, yet no definitive medical history of the newborn has been available until now. The Oxford Textbook of the Newborn: A Cultural and Medical History offers readers a unique and authoritative resource on the 3000-year history of the newborn within Western societies. Written by Professor Michael Obladen, a leading voice in neonatology, this book reflects on our perception of newborns, from the earliest days of human thought, through to the traces that remained in medieval life and persist today. It unearths ideas and evidence of societies' perceptions of newborns through a beautifully illustrated, impressive and often never-seen-before set of historical sources from libraries, archives, churches, excavation fields, and hospital charts around the world. Split into 8 sections which each cover aspects of the natural lifecycle of a neonate, this book demonstrates the impact of religion, law, ethics, philosophy and culture on newborns' quality of life, and covers fascinating topics such as the rites of passage for the newborn, infanticide, opium use, breastfeeding, and artificial feeding. Each chapter is written in an accessible style and includes high-quality historical illustrations which really bring the subject to life.

Acutely unwell patients can deteriorate dangerously without timely recognition and intervention. Emergencies in Clinical Medicine provides an easy-to-use guide to the prompt management of common medical emergencies. Designed for rapid use, it explains how to arrive at a differential diagnosis and how to prevent, manage, or treat an emergency. The second edition has been fully updated to reflect current clinical guidelines and includes several new topics, from pulmonary oedemas to the overdose patient. Revised to cover the curricula for core medical training (CMT) and acute care common stem (ACS), this text addresses exactly what the trainee doctor needs to know. The text covers emergencies from both a problem-based and disease-based approach. Cross-referencing between these two sections enables quick reference under pressure, with clear, step-by-step instructions and advice on when and who to call for help. With key algorithms for quick reference and easy to follow symbols indicating clinical severity, from life-threatening to minor, this text will help clinical staff managing acutely ill patients in an easy-to-read and portable format.

Synopsis Crossing the Quality Chasm by : Institute of Medicine
Second in a series of publications from the Institute of Medicine's Quality of Health Care in America project Today's health care providers have more research findings and more technology available to them than ever before. Yet recent reports have raised serious doubts about the quality of health care in America. Crossing the Quality Chasm makes an urgent call for fundamental change to close the quality gap. This book recommends a sweeping redesign of the American health care system and provides overarching principles for specific direction for policymakers, health care leaders, clinicians, regulators, purchasers, and others. In this comprehensive volume the committee offers: A set of performance expectations for the 21st century health care system. A set of 10 new rules to guide patient-clinician relationships. A suggested organizing framework to better align the incentives inherent in payment and accountability with improvements in quality. Key steps to promote evidence-based practice and strengthen clinical information systems. Analyzing health care organizations as complex systems, Crossing the Quality Chasm also documents the causes of the quality gap, identifies current practices that impede quality care, and explores how systems approaches can be used to implement change.
