This Proceedings volume contains papers from three symposia which were held during the 29th International Geological Congress, Kyoto, Japan, 24 August--3 September 1992. From the first symposium --- ''Metamorphic Reactions: kinetics and mass transfer'' --- 5 papers were selected for publication. One of the objectives of the symposium was to clarify the nature of reactions and mass transfer from the viewpoint of kinetics. From the ''Sandstone Petrology in Relation to Tectonics''-symposium, 10 papers were selected and revised for inclusion in this book. The articles reflect the different approaches on the relationship between sandstone composition and tectonic setting. The third symposium in this volume --- ''Evaporite and Desert Environment'' consists of 8 selected papers. The papers summarize the relationship between various desertification factors and the dynamics of different regions, and the classification of these regions according to their geological and mineralogical factors.

The Eastern Mediterranean region is a classic area for the study of tectonic processes and settings related to the development of the Tethyan orogenic belt. The present set of research and synthesis papers by earth scientists from countries in this region and others provides an up-to-date, interdisciplinary overview of the tectonic development of the Eastern Mediterranean region from Precambrian to Recent. Key topics include continental rifting, ophiolite genesis and emplacement, continental collision, extensional tectonics, crustal exhumation and intra-plate deformation (e.g. active faulting). Alternative tectonic reconstructions of the Tethyan orogen are presented and discussed, with important implications for other regions of the world. This book furnishes detailed information about Turkey's existing mineral resources, besides providing concepts and ideas which may help the search for potential mineral resources in the future. It is a first book in the English-language international literature on mineral resources of Turkey and it is aimed at economic geologists, mining engineers, and mining investors, as well as graduate and undergraduate students. This work focuses mainly on a range of mineral systems and related geological features throughout Turkey. Taking into account the lack of international literature on these resources, a considerable portion of the book explains the geological context of the region and the settings in which the mineral resources occur. The genetic characteristics of these mineral resources are emphasized and important information is also presented on their economic aspects. All chapter contributions are prepared by researchers and professional geologists.
