Synopsis Finite and Infinite Sets by : A. Hajnal
Colloquia Mathematica Societatis Jânos Bolyai, 37: Finite and Infinite Sets, Vol. I focuses on the principles, operations, and approaches involved in finite and infinite sets. The selection first elaborates on essential chains and squares, cellular automata in trees, almost disjoint families of countable sets, and application of Lovasz local lemma. Discussions focus on deleting operations, number of all and self-dual E-chains, transversality of E-chains and E-squares, and binary E-chains and E-squares. The text then elaborates on induced subgraphs, inverse extremal digraph problems, two Sperner-type conditions, and minimal decomposition of all graphs with equinumerous vertices and edges into mutually isomorphic subgraphs. Topics include general digraph extremal problem, matrix graphs and quadratic forms, augmentation of matrices, set of attained densities, proof of the continuity theorem, and inverse extremal multigraph problems. The text examines circular flows in graphs, two-colorings of simple arrangements, monochromatic paths in infinite colored graphs, and graphs associated with an integral domain and their applications. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in finite and infinite sets.

Synopsis The International Commission on Mathematical Instruction, 1908-2008: People, Events, and Challenges in Mathematics Education by : Fulvia Furinghetti
The book presents the history of ICMI trough a prosopographical approach. In other words, it pays a lot of attention to the actors of the International movement. The portraits of the members of the ICMI Central Committees (1908-1936) and ICMI Executive Committees (1952-2008), and other eminent figures in ICMI history, who have passed away in the first 100 years of its life, are the guiding thread of the volume. Each portrait includes: · Biographical information · An outline of the various contributions made by the individual in question to the study of problems pertaining to mathematics teaching/education · Primary bibliography · Secondary with particular attention to the publications concerning the teaching of mathematics · Images: photos, book frontispieces, relevant manuscripts The authors of the portraits (30 altogether) are researchers in the history of mathematics, mathematics, and mathematics education. The focus on the officer’s role within ICMI and on his/her contributions to mathematics education, make the portraits different from usual biographies. In particular, since most officers were active mathematicians, the portraits shed light on aspects of their lesser-known activity. Connecting chapters place the action of these figures in the historical context and in the different phases of ICMI history.

Synopsis Elements of Quasigroup Theory and Applications by : Victor Shcherbacov
Understanding Interaction is a book that explores the interaction between people and technology, in the broader context of the relations between the human made and the natural environments. It is not just about digital technologies – our computers, smart phones, the Internet – but all our technologies such as mechanical, electrical and electronic. Our ancestors started creating mechanical tools and shaping their environments millions of years ago, developing cultures and languages, which in turn influenced our evolution. Volume 1 of Understanding Interaction looks into this deep history – starting from the tool creating period (the longest and most influential on our physical and mental capacities), to the settlement period (agriculture, domestication, villages and cities, written language), the industrial period (science, engineering, reformation and renaissance), and finally the communication period (mass media, digital technologies, global networks). Volume 2 looks into humans in interaction – our physiology, anatomy, neurology, psychology, how we experience and influence the world, and how we (think we) think. From this transdisciplinary understanding, design approaches and frameworks are presented, to potentially guide future developments and innovations. The aim of the book is to be guide and inspiration for designers, artists, engineers, psychologists, media producers, social scientists etc., and as such be useful for both novices and more experienced practitioners.

Synopsis Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians by : S.D. Chatterji
Since the first ICM was held in Zürich in 1897, it has become the pinnacle of mathematical gatherings. It aims at giving an overview of the current state of different branches of mathematics and its applications as well as an insight into the treatment of special problems of exceptional importance. The proceedings of the ICMs have provided a rich chronology of mathematical development in all its branches and a unique documentation of contemporary research. They form an indispensable part of every mathematical library. The Proceedings of the International Congress of Mathematicians 1994, held in Zürich from August 3rd to 11th, 1994, are published in two volumes. Volume I contains an account of the organization of the Congress, the list of ordinary members, the reports on the work of the Fields Medalists and the Nevanlinna Prize Winner, the plenary one-hour addresses, and the invited addresses presented at Section Meetings 1 - 6. Volume II contains the invited address for Section Meetings 7 - 19. A complete author index is included in both volumes. '...the content of these impressive two volumes sheds a certain light on the present state of mathematical sciences and anybody doing research in mathematics should look carefully at these Proceedings. For young people beginning research, this is even more important, so these are a must for any serious mathematics library. The graphical presentation is, as always with Birkhäuser, excellent....' Synopsis Fuzzy Information and Engineering by : Bingyuan Cao
This book is the proceedings of the Third Annual Conference on Fuzzy Information and Engineering (ACFIE2008) from Dec. 5-10, 2008 in Haikou, China. The conf- ence proceedingsis published by Springer-Verlag(Advancesin Soft Computing,ISSN: 1615-3871). This year, we have received 155 submissions. Each paper has undergone a rigorous review process. Only high-quality papers are included. The Third Annual Conference on Fuzzy Information and Engineering (ACFIE2008), built on the success of previous conferences, the ACFIE2005 (Guangzhou,China), is a major symposium for scientists, engineers and practitioners in China to present their updated results, ideas, devel- ments and applications in all areas of fuzzy information and engineering. It aims to strengthen relations between industry research laboratoriesand universities, and to c- ate a primary symposium for world scientists in fuzzy ?elds as follows: 1) Fuzzy intelligence, neural networks and optimal; 2) Fuzzy algebra; 3) Fuzzy analysis; 4) Fuzzy systems and logic; 5) Fuzzy topology and measure; 6)Fuzzy probability, control, forecasting and decision-making; 7) Fuzzy clustering and fuzzy algorithms; 8) Application in fuzzy sets; 9) Rough sets and its application; etc. This book contains 80 papers, divided into nine main parts: In Section I, we have 9 papers on “fuzzy intelligence, neural networks and optimal”. In Section II, we have 11 papers on “fuzzy algebra”. In Section III, we have 9 papers on “fuzzy analysis”. In Section IV, we have 9 papers on “fuzzy systems and logic”. In Section V, we have 9 papers on “fuzzy topology and measure”.
