Synopsis I Thought the Sun Was God by : Masako Kimura Streling
Born in a poor fishing village under difficult circumstances, Masako, a descendant of the Satsuma Samurai Clan, grew up burdened with many, filial responsibilities, in a rigorously class-conscious and patriarchal society-one headed for massive and profound change. Unable to reconcile herself to the many roles within roles imposed upon her, and feeling in her heart that she was destined to make a difference, Masako embarked on a lifelong journey of growth and self-discovery that took her across the Pacific Ocean and eventually led her to God. In their sixties-when most Americans are hoping to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labors-Masako and her husband Carl spent three years as the first Lay Missionaries for the Society of St. Columban in Japan. Those years, while life changing, were also painful and left Masako scarred and in a state of spiritual and emotional crisis. Questioning her role, her identity, and her very worth, Masako returned to the United States to rebuild a life, and reconnect with the Church community. I Thought The Sun Was God is a powerful story of faith's eventual triumph over deprivation, denial, and rejection. It relates the author's struggle with adversity and injustice, culminating with her eventual surrender to the true higher power. It is about the struggle versus adversity and injustice, but it is also about surrender to one true higher power and finding one's voice while listening for the small, still voice of God.

Synopsis The Satsuma Rebellion by : Sean Michael Wilson
A gripping graphic novel describing the uprising of 1877, when the old style samurai were crushed in a bloody conflict with the imperial army that ended samurai power in Japan Award-winning comic book writer Sean Michael Wilson and acclaimed manga artist Akiko Shimojima team up to tell the riveting story that changed the face of modern Japan. Depicting thrilling scenes of battles, gunships, castle sieges, and the samurais' heroic last stand, this book portrays the bloody uprising of 1877, when Satsuma rebels, led by the infamous Saigo Takamori, fought enforced modernization by the Meiji Japanese government. Their crushing defeat by the imperial army ended their power once and for all and ushered in an era of modern technology and western military methods. Wilson's thrilling narrative and Shimojima's striking images convey both the drama of these events and the importance of the historical moment. Historically accurate and with an easy-to-read format, The Satsuma Rebellion is Volume 2 in the Illustrated Japanese History series that began with Black Ships.

Synopsis Index of Japanese Swordsmiths A-M by : Markus Sesko
"This index contains a comprehensive listing of more than 20,000 Japanese swordsmiths, from the early days right down to modern times, i.e. from kotô to shinsakutô. It is not simply a list of names, it also provides biographical information according to the extent of a smith's fame. Aim is to give the reader a coherent picture of a certain smith, that means his civilian name, how did he sign, in which style did he work, and who was his master or his school environment. Thereby, the most common theories on a smith are included and discrepancies in the transmissions are pointed out. This work is a revised and completely new recorded list of smiths by incorporating all relevant Japanese and non-Japanese sources. Incorrect entries and double listings were deleted and readings corrected. The smiths are listed in alphabetical order and sorted according to their used characters. A list of all characters used in the names of the smiths in this index is available, sorted by stroke order, so that the search of a smith with an unknown reading is also possible."--Back cover.
