Synopsis Simulation and Performance Analysis of Internet Protocols Over ACTS by : Roy Laurens
Abstract: "Communication satellites today are playing an important role in satisfying the increasing demand for worldwide telecommunications. The new generation of proposed satellite systems like Teledesic and the Hughes Spaceway system, to name a few, promise to provide global, broadband connectivity. A number of the technologies to be used on these satellite systems have not been completely validated in a large user environment. As a forerunner to these proposed systems, NASA has an experimental satellite, ACTS, that uses some of the new technologies like on-board switching, hopping spot beams, and the Ka-band. NASA is very interested and is actively leading the effort in researching interoperability of high bandwidth Ka-band satellites like ACTS with terrestrial high bandwidth, low propagation networks. Industries that have a global presence have applications that need broadband standards-based global connectivity. One such industry is the earthmoving and mining equipment industry. Mining and construction equipment is used in some of the remotest locations in the world with no established communications infrastructure. No single wireless networking technology can meet their special needs. They are looking for solutions that can provide high speed, low propagation wireless local area network solutions at the remote site and also solutions that can provide broadband global connectivity to the site. The broadband solution needs to seamlessly integrate with other terrestrial networks. For these companies, the global coverage and the high bandwidth capabilities offered by the new generation satellite systems enable a whole set of new applications. This thesis is an attempt to address the issue of interoperability with terrestrial and cellular networks. It does this in three ways. First, developing a model for broadband geostationary satellites that can be used for conducting communication protocols research. Second, by looking at the issue of mobility and communication protocols that support mobility for broadband communications. Third, by analyzing some of the proposed versions of the TCP transport protocol for a TCP/IP-based broadband satellite network. The thesis analyzes the performance of different TCP versions, TCP Normal (Reno), TCP SACK, and TCP FACK over ACTS. The performance of Mobile IP and TCP when used together in the ACTS environment is enhanced. A method of buffering is proposed and implemented to improve the performance of Mobile IP. A simulation model of the ACTS satellite link is developed in a network simulation package called ns. The Two-State Markov model using a Pareto distribution is a probabilistic error model directly integrated with the simulator. The simulation model is verified with results from the experiments conducted over ACTS."

Synopsis Multicast Routing Algorithms and Failure Analyses for Low Earth Orbit Satellite Communication Networks by : Jae Soong Lee
In the rapidly changing environment of mobile communications, the importance of the mobile satellite (e,g,, low earth orbit satellites (LEOsats)) networks will increase due to their global visibility and connection. Multicasting is an effective communication method in terms of frequency spectrum usage for a LEO network. It is devised to provide lower network traffic (i,e,, one-to-many transmissions). This research examines the system performance of two dissimilar terrestrially-based multicasting protocols: the Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP) and the On Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). These two protocols are simulated in large group membership density and in the presence of satellite failures. Two different algorithms are developed and used to select critical satellites for degrading a LEO network constellation. The simulation results show that the ODMRP protocol successfully reconfigured routes in large group membership density areas and in satellite failure conditions. Results also show that the ODMRP provided reliable packet delivery. However, ODMRP showed an enormous end-to-end delay in severe satellite failure conditions. This result is attributable to the delayed route refreshing procedure of ODMRP. In contrast, the DVMRP suffered from broken routes and complexity in the large group membership density and in satellite failure conditions. It had a smaller packet delivery ratio than the ODMRP (approximately 85,5% versus 98,9% for the 80 user case). The DVMRP showed scalable and stable end-to-end delay under multiple failed satellite conditions. The large group membership density and the multiple satellite failure conditions provide a more complete assessment for these two protocols.
