Synopsis A Lifetime's Non-ordinary Events by : Richard F. Ward

In about the year 1980, I began recording the non-ordinary events, people met and places visited in my life. Eventually, I looked back into my past life to recount past events, people and places which came to mind for the earlier years. As subsequent years rolled by, I had assembled a list of 172 items which I consider unusual or non-ordinary in my lifetime. My next step in the evolution of this work was to elaborate on each of the parts - to expand on each of the one or two line statements. When assembled, it dawned on me that it provided an autobiography, albeit different from a usual biography, of my life. Hopefully, the treatment will render the human story more entertaining to the average reader. Having reached the middle of my octogenarian decade, perhaps a better perspective can thus be obtained. The reader's entertainment is the effect I wish to impart. If this should ensue, the effort shall not have been merely self-aggrandizement.

Synopsis The Deadline Effect by : Christopher Cox

In the tradition of Charles Duhigg’s The Power of Habit, a wise and fascinating book that shows us how “we can make deadlines work for us instead of the other way around” (The Wall Street Journal). Perfectionists and procrastinators alike agree—it’s natural to dread a deadline. Whether you are completing a masterpiece or just checking off an overwhelming to-do list, the ticking clock signals despair. Christopher Cox knows the panic of the looming deadline all too well—as a magazine editor, he has spent years overseeing writers and journalists who couldn’t meet a deadline to save their lives. After putting in a few too many late nights in the newsroom, he became determined to learn the secret of managing deadlines. He set off to observe nine different organizations as they approached a high-pressure deadline. Along the way, Cox made an even greater discovery: these experts didn’t just meet their big deadlines—they became more focused, productive, and creative in the process. An entertaining blend of “behavioral science, psychological theory, and academic studies with compelling storytelling and descriptive case studies” (Financial Times), The Deadline Effect reveals the time-management strategies these teams used to guarantee success while staying on schedule: a restaurant opening for the first time, a ski resort covering an entire mountain in snow, a farm growing enough lilies in time for Easter, and more. Cox explains how to use deadlines to our advantage, the dynamics of teams and customers, and techniques for using deadlines to make better, more effective decisions.

Synopsis Saying Amen by : Kathleen Hughes, RSCJ

In Saying Amen: Entering into the Mystery of the Sacraments, Kathleen Hughes invites readers to deepen their liturgical prayer. She does this through a method of exploring the sacramental liturgies and reflecting on them. This method of mystagogy—the holy remembering of the words, gestures, sights, scents, music, and silence of the event—opens people to the touch of God. That openness can lead to transformation and a better understanding of what it means to say Amen during communal prayer. This book, which includes the fruit of Kathleen’s interviews with hundreds of Catholics, is a valuable resource for scholars, students, and pastoral ministers. Not only does Saying Amen present a mystagogical method, it provides reflections from the faithful on how the liturgy has touched their lives.

Synopsis Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan by : Paul R. Smokowski

This book examines bullying and victimization at different points across the lifespan, from childhood through old age. It examines bullying at disparate ecological levels, such as within the family, in school, on the internet, at the work place, and between countries. This volume explores the connections between variations of bullying that manifests in multiple forms of violence and victimization. It also describes how bullying dynamics can affect individuals, families, and communities. Using a universal definition of bullying dynamics, chapters discuss bullying roles during different developmental periods across the lifespan. In addition, chapters review each role in the bullying dynamic and discuss behavioral health consequences, prevention strategies, and ways to promote restorative justice to decrease the impact of toxic bullying behaviors on society. The book concludes with recommendations for possible solutions and prevention suggestions. Topics featured in this book include: Mental health and the neurobiological impacts of bullying. The prevalence of bystanders and their behavior in bullying dynamics. The relationship between traditional bullying and cyberbullying. How bullying causes trauma. Sibling violence and bullying. Bullying in intimate partner relationships. Elder abuse as a form of bullying. Why bullying is a global public health concern. Bullying and Victimization Across the Lifespan is a must-have resource for researchers, professors, clinicians, and related professionals as well as graduate students in clinical child, school, and developmental psychology, social work, public health, and family studies as well as anthropology, social psychology, sociology, and criminology.
