Synopsis Chili Dog MVP by : David Fletcher
"Chili Dog MVP: Dick Allen, The 1972 White Sox and A Transforming Chicago" re-creates a unique time and place in baseball and Chicago history, when the arrival of a controversial slugger lifted the bedraggled Sox out of a daunting hole and briefly united a fractious fan base for the two hours-plus he played.Lead author John Owens, along with Dr. David Fletcher and George Castle, weave an entertaining narrative of Allen, his teammates and broadcaster Harry Caray bringing pride to a franchise that had one foot out of town to Milwaukee just 2 1/2 years previously and equal status in profile with the dominant Chicago Cubs. The best baseball books endeavor to re-create the time, place and "feel" of a team and the people around it. "Chili Dog MVP" follows in that tradition to recall a more innocent time in baseball intertwining with the hard truths of a hyper-political city like Chicago. In both baseball and life, for which the game is often a metaphor, past is prologue.Edited by baseball writer par excellence, George Castle. George has written 21 books, and is a historian for the Chicago Baseball Museum.

Synopsis How White Evangelicals Think by : Dave Verhaagen
The majority of Americans have looked on in some combination of horror and befuddlement as many white Christians, particularly evangelicals, have revealed beliefs and opinions seemingly antithetical to the Christian faith, whether holding racist attitudes, supporting conspiracy theories, aligning with nationalistic and authoritarian movements, or becoming hostile toward the different and marginalized. Dr. Dave Verhaagen, a nationally board-certified psychologist and author, tackles the challenge of explaining the psychology behind what has become the unique mind of the modern white Christian. Each chapter explores one or more robust psychological principles that help make sense of why white Christians think like they do.

Synopsis Hot Dog by : Bruce Kraig
Char-grilled or boiled? Sauerkraut or chili? Mustard or ketchup? Vienna Beef or Sabrett? Only these questions could be raised about one of the world’s favorite backyard, picnic, ballgame, and street foods—the hotdog. Though nearly two billion hot dogs are consumed by Americans annually in the month of July alone, there is absolutely no consensus on which is the right way to serve up a hotdog. In Hot Dog, well known food historian Bruce Kraig recounts the history of this popular “tube steak” from the origin of the sausage 20,000 years ago to its central place in American culture today. Kraig discusses the many brands, including Hebrew National, Pearl, Sabrett, and Vienna Beef, and the regional variations that go along with them—like kosher-style New York dogs loaded with mustard and sauerkraut, New England dogs with Boston Baked Beans, and fully-loaded Chicago style hotdogs, complete with mustard, onion, relish, sport peppers, a dill pickle spear, a dash of celery salt, and tomato slices (but never, ever ketchup). Hot Dog covers the other international sausages, like bologna and bockwurst, as well, and explores some of the apocryphal tales of the hotdog in history—like the origin of its name and whether Queen Elizabeth II was truly served hotdogs on a visit to the White House. Packed with tasty facts and recipes, Hot Dog reveals the rich history and passionate opinions about this seemingly ordinary food.

Synopsis World Foods with Strange Names by : Dr. Ian Grierson
If you have that travel bug thing in your system and that is combined with my being a compulsive foodie for most of my life then you have someone with an obsessive interest in International cuisines. I knew many of our dishes in these Islands have weird names but the more I travelled, each country I visited or neighbouring countries had a scattering of curiously or contradictory named dishes. It became almost a hobby of mine to hunt them out to study their recipes, their histories or at least explore how they got their strange names. We may have in England foods like “sweetbreads” but in Italy there is “Jump in the Mouth”, Iran has its “Water Meat”, China “Ants Climbing a Tree” or in the US you might enjoy “Poor Boy with Debris”. I have made a number of them at home, eaten many more in restaurants or as street food but some I have never had only read about. There are no recipes as such in my book only some words about strangely named foods from around the Globe I hope you find interesting.

Synopsis Have I Got Dogs for You! by : Anthony Linick
Have I Got Dogs For You! continues its exploration of daily life in Londons Paddington Recreation Ground. The society pictured in this account is a unique one, an ever-changing kaleidoscope of dogs and their owners. The dogs represent most of the popular breeds and many of the mutt-like mixtures as so do their accompanying humans, who come from diverse nationalities and from many walks of life: professionals and job seekers, young and old, family members and loners. They are united in their love of dogs, and on the central green of the park, on its walkways and at the caf where they gather after exercising their animals, they often let this affection for dogs carry them into friendships that transcend park life and involve many of them in additional social activities. The book is also the story of Fritz the Schnauzer and provides a daily record of his antics and the folkways of the rest of the crew, human and canine. Not only do we have an insight into the relationship of man and beast but a glimpse into London life as it experienced in the first decade of the 21st Century. Such a life, we know, is full of struggles and tensions and these are certainly reflected in this chronicle and so is a lot of good canine fun.

Synopsis Chili Dawgs Always Bark at Night by : Lewis Grizzard
The author of the phenomenal - and hilarious - best-seller Don't Bend over in the Garden, Granny, You Know Them Taters Got Eyes is back with an all-new collection of his funniest, sharpest observations yet. In Chili Dawgs Always Bark at Night, Grizzard once again confirms his reputation as the "William Faulkner of just plain folks" using colorful storytelling and his own wonderful brand of humor to tackle such Grizzardian subjects as: International Relations: "If John Wayne were still alive, he'd know what to do to the Japanese investors - take a seven iron and run them and their checkbooks back home before it's too late and Vanna White has to learn eight zillion character signs in the Japanese alphabet to keep her job." Fashion: "Don't wear anything that features a picture of a pelican, a pink flamingo or a beer can." The Future: "I'm predicting the world isn't going to come to an end anytime soon. There's too much unresolved, like whether or not Elvis is still alive, Jimmy Swaggart can stay on television, and if there will be another Rambo sequel." Dating: "Any single white female who has to resort to taking out an ad to find a boyfriend would take a SWM who's into yodeling, Hustler magazine, Ripple and robbing convenience stores." Getting Back to Nature: "Snakes are right up there with the things that I fear most. Lightning is on that list. So is flying in bad weather at night, the dentist, and revenge-minded ex-wives." People Who Cheat in the 12-Items-or-Less Express Lane: "Previously, I have dog-cussed these people and put curses on them, like, 'May your children grow up to be liberal Democrats.' I'm not going to be that mean-spirited anymore. What I'm going to do is go to the vegetable bin, grab a large cucumber, and beat them about the head and shoulders with it." Lewis Grizzard offers his views on everything from politics, religion, sex and golf to the largest condom heist in history, proving he is wittier and more outrageous than ever. Chili Dawgs Always Bark at Night shows why the South's most popular humorist is now America's most popular funny man.
