Synopsis Codex Wallerstein by : Grzegorz Zabinski

The Codex Wallerstein is one of the best known of the late medieval fencing treatises still in existence. Though perhaps not as widely known as Talhoffer 1467 or Flos Duellatorum, it is just as important to students of the Western martial arts. Originally written in Middle High German during the late 14th and early 15th centuries, the Codex Wallerstein has long been available to scholars in microfilm format from Augusburg University. Now with the publication of this book, the text and drawings are available to scholars and martial artists in the original Middle High German, as well as in Modern German and English translations. The translations were provided by Grzegorz Zabinski, with assistance from Bartlomiej Walczak, two of the most esteemed interpreters of medieval combat in the world. The codex offers a series of fundamental counters to common attacks, using the longsword, falchion and dagger, as well as the complete system of wrestling techniques. In this work the reader will find a great deal of instruction on thrusting at or closing in against an opponent, expanding Master Johannes Liechtenauer's art of longsword combat. For martial artists, medievalists, historians or anyone with an interest in historical arms or self-defense, Codex Wallerstein is sure to become an invaluable reference.

Synopsis The Essential Wallerstein by : Immanuel Maurice Wallerstein

This work draws upon the full range of Wallerstein's social scientific scholarship, from his research on contemporary African politics, to his study of the modern world-system and essays on the new structures of knowledge emerging from the crisis of the capitalist world-economy. His singular focus on the way in which change in one part of the globe affects the whole is all the more relevant as the world grows increasingly inter-dependant.

Synopsis Forty-two Lives in Treatment by : Robert S. Wallerstein

This 1986 work was the capstone for a sequence of about 70 articles and monographs by almost 20 authors, published over a quarter of a century, that chronicled the Psychotherapy Research Project of the Menninger Foundation. The 30-year project studied the treatment (beginning in the 1950s) and subsequent lives of 42 patients, half of them in psychoanalysis and half in psychoanalytically informed, expressive and supportive psychotherapies. The major findings and conclusions of the research are described in over 100 pages in the final section of the volume, which when it was first released was called the most ambitious and comprehensive psychotherapy research program ever carried out. In a preface, Wallerstein expresses hope that the less expensive softcover edition might give the volume a renewed lease on life. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Synopsis The Global Left by : Immanuel Wallerstein

In The Global Left: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow, Immanuel Wallerstein takes stock of the practices of the left, historically in the time of its great ideals and today in the midst of the global crisis of capitalism. He underlines the urgency of seeing the emergence of a global and united left that can pave the way out of the centuries-old domination of capital, considering antisystemic movements, dilemmas of the left in relation to the structural crisis of the modern world-system, and tactics and strategies for political action. The book includes new essays by Étienne Balibar, James K. Galbraith, Johan Galtung, Nilüfer Göle, Pablo González Casanova, and Michel Wieviorka in conversation with Wallerstein’s core ideas.
