Synopsis Voices from the Sky by : Arthur C. Clarke
First published in 1965, this brilliant, prescient book is divided into three sections: The first concerns space travel and other aspects of the new space age: how our concept of time must be modified when we travel long distances, the space seas of tomorrow, uses of the moon, how lower gravity will affect the sports of space colonists and other fascinating ideas. The second part is about communications satellites, a field in which the author has already played the role of true prophet. The third section ranges widely over the side implications of the space age - scientific meddling, the lunatic fringe and the moral obligations of scientists.

Synopsis The Marvelous Clouds by : John Durham Peters
“An ambitious re-writing—a re-synthesis, even—of concepts of media and culture . . . It is nothing less than an attempt at a history of Being.” —Los Angeles Review of Books When we speak of clouds these days, it is as likely that we mean data clouds or network clouds as cumulus or stratus. In their sharing of the term, both kinds of clouds reveal an essential truth: that the natural world and the technological world are not so distinct. In The Marvelous Clouds, John Durham Peters argues that though we often think of media as environments, the reverse is just as true—environments are media. Peters defines media expansively as elements that compose the human world. Drawing from ideas implicit in media philosophy, Peters argues that media are more than carriers of messages: they are the very infrastructures combining nature and culture that allow human life to thrive. Through an encyclopedic array of examples from the oceans to the skies, The Marvelous Clouds reveals the long prehistory of so-called new media. Digital media, Peters argues, are an extension of early practices tied to the establishment of civilization such as mastering fire, building calendars, reading the stars, creating language, and establishing religions. New media do not take us into uncharted waters, but rather confront us with the deepest and oldest questions of society and ecology: how to manage the relations people have with themselves, others, and the natural world. A wide-ranging meditation on the many means we have employed to cope with the struggles of existence—from navigation to farming, meteorology to Google—The Marvelous Clouds shows how media lie at the very heart of our interactions with the world around us.

Synopsis The Expositions On The Psalms Volume 2 by : St. Augustine of Hippo
In any commentary on a portion of the Old Testament by a writer unacquainted with Hebrew, exact criticism, and freedom from mistake, must not be expected. But the Psalms have been so in the mouth and in the heart of God's people in all languages, that it has been necessary often to find an explanation suitable to imperfect translations. And no doubt it is intended that we should use such explanations for the purpose of edification, when we are unable to be more accurate, though in proving doctrine it is necessary always to remember and allow for any want of acquaintance with the original, or uncertainty with respect to its actual meaning. However, the main scope and bearing of the text is rarely affected by such points as vary in different translations, and the analogy of the faith is sufficient to prevent a Catholic mind from adopting any error in consequence of a text seeming to bear a heterodox meaning. Perhaps the errors of translation in the existing versions may have led the Fathers to adopt rules of interpretation ranging too far from the simple and literal; but having such translations, they could hardly use them otherwise. Meanwhile St. Augustin will be found to excel in the intense apprehension of those great truths which pervade the whole of Sacred Writ, and in the vivid and powerful exposition of what bears upon them. It is hardly possible to read his practical and forcible applications of Holy Scripture, without feeling those truths by the faith of which we ought to live brought home to the heart in a wonderful manner. His was a mind that strove earnestly to solve the great problems of human life, and after exhausting the resources, and discovering the emptiness, of erroneous systems, found truth and rest at last in Catholic Christianity, in the religion of the Bible as expounded by St. Ambrose. This is volume two out of two, covering the Psalms LXXIV through CL.

Synopsis A Voice Loud as Thunder by : Virginia-Morning Sky
Where do we go when we die? At the time of death, do we automatically get on an escalator to heaven, or do we have a choice to go forward or not? Through communicating with the spirit realm of heaven and earth, Kathleen and Virginia discover that the God-given gift of choice is infinite. Some people choose to remain here, earthbound, after their death. What happens to these lost souls? This is a true story of two women who reach out in love to touch those who are stuck in the quicksand of an existence between worlds. They are not alone. Jesus, the Mother of God, angels, and many others in spirit join them. They are guided, supported, and protected each step of the way. In A Voice Loud as Thunder, we meet two earthbound spirits (ghosts) who died in 1863. One is a Native American from the area now known as Rancho Cucamonga, California, and the other is a soldier who was sent to this state to kill Native Americans. Through their journey of forgiveness and love, we learn how to release our anger and fears that have the power to hold us in an earthbound state after we die. The conversations between these two women and those in the spiritual realm give us an insight into a world that many of us never explore. They bring love, light, and truth to a subject that has been misunderstood by many.
