Synopsis Unraveling Mysteries of Life by : Gauri Shankar Gupta

Neither scientific, nor philosophical qualification is needed to read this book. Simple yet refined wording makes its content easily understandable for all kinds of readers. The author takes into account the discoveries of modern science about our world, our environment and our bodies, looking for and finding answers to all the unanswered questions in ancient Indian and Greek wisdom. „This book will not be kept on my bookshelf but will remain on my table and I’m going to read it for the rest of my life. I’m going to learn from it and will meditate on issues covered in it. The wisdom, Gupta relies on and carries in his heart and soul is not a religion, nor a philosophy, nor a belief, nor a science; but is a metaphysical knowledge. It is the only and absolute ancient knowledge, which deals with questions that govern the world and human existence.” Péter Müller „Gupta is a true man of the world. He has wide knowledge of modern scientific and intellectual developments. But he is also acquainted with the wisdom of the past. He is well equipped to speak to an international audience of intellectuals, religionists, and political leaders about the nature of our modern problems and the way forward to practical solutions. The solutions Gupta presents are based on the best that modern science and ancient wisdom have to offer us. By offering new ways of understanding who we are and where we are, based on his deep acquaintance with source of traditional wisdom, both Eastern and Western, Gupta gives us hope of a better future. “ Michael A. Cremo

Synopsis Heart of Darkness by : Jeremiah P. Ostriker

Humanity's ongoing quest to unlock the secrets of dark matter and dark energy Heart of Darkness describes the incredible saga of humankind's quest to unravel the deepest secrets of the universe. Over the past thirty years, scientists have learned that two little-understood components—dark matter and dark energy—comprise most of the known cosmos, explain the growth of all cosmic structure and hold the key to the universe's fate. The story of how evidence for the so-called "Lambda-Cold Dark Matter" model of cosmology has been gathered by generations of scientists throughout the world is told here by one of the pioneers of the field, Jeremiah Ostriker, and his coauthor Simon Mitton. From humankind's early attempts to comprehend Earth's place in the solar system, to astronomers' exploration of the Milky Way galaxy and the realm of the nebulae beyond, to the detection of the primordial fluctuations of energy from which all subsequent structure developed, this book explains the physics and the history of how the current model of our universe arose and has passed every test hurled at it by the skeptics. Throughout this rich story, an essential theme is emphasized: how three aspects of rational inquiry—the application of direct measurement and observation, the introduction of mathematical modeling, and the requirement that hypotheses should be testable and verifiable—guide scientific progress and underpin our modern cosmological paradigm. This monumental puzzle is far from complete, however, as scientists confront the mysteries of the ultimate causes of cosmic structure formation and the real nature and origin of dark matter and dark energy.

Synopsis Unraveling the Mystery of Health by : Aaron Antonovsky

Antonovsky's book challenges the health care community to reassess its approach to health. He asserts that the focus for too long has been solely on illness and the treatment of specific disease, with little or no attention directed at the factors and conditions necessary for health. The author offers a way to evaluate the psychological, social, and cultural factors that relate to health and well-being. Antonovsky presents a model that he calls the ``sense of coherence'' (SOC), suggesting that the way people make sense of the world is a major factor in their health. He provides, as an appendix, a questionnaire for assessing the SOC for individuals to evaluate and predict how well they manage stress and stay healthy. This model was presented by Antonovsky in an earlier work, but this volume provides more detail on both the theoretical and research database for the SOC. Insight is provided on how SOC affects neuroendocrine and immunological processes and thus overall health. The conceptual framework presented in this book is useful and important. The writing style, however, is often cumbersome, making for difficult reading. In addition, the author assumes readers are familiar with his earlier work, Health, Stress and Coping (CH, Jan '80); readers not acquainted with its content will find it difficult to follow the ideas being presented. In spite of these shortcomings, the book sets an important direction for thought in the evolution of health promotion strategies.
